hi
i have just been given a imac built in 09/09/99 and it will only boot up as far as a small computer and flash with a question mark. The problem occured when removing a newer version of mac and now the most i can do is eject the CD in firmware. when i put my mac os disk into it and try and boot it it says that the load size is too small.
any help will be much appreciated because i no absolutely nothing about these computers.

the flashing "?" simply means that the Mac cannot find an operating system. You stated that you removed that, so you're getting that response as a result. The next step will be to install an operating system.
You said you are trying to use your CD. Tell me where you got that disk - did it come with the iMac? It should have the system software version listed on the disk label.
I have never heard of a message like you describe - can you give me the exact text that you see?
If it is a bootable disk, you should be able to boot by inserting that disk, restarting while holding the letter C, then continue on with the install.
If you see a message something like "you cannot install this software on this computer" then you may have an installer that shipped with a different model Mac. Usually, you can't use a disk that shipped with a different Mac.
