Hi there:
I switched from my eMac G4 to a iMac G5 PPC. I was really hoping to see a huge difference in speed and it is slower than my eMac.
We are using two users and I am the Administrator. When my husband goes to his account, using user fast switching, it is as slow as molasses. It takes forever for the screen to come up and load. Generally when he uses Safari it is really slow to the point that he doesn't even want to use it. Dial-up comes to mind.
Specs: Mac OSX 10.4.6
Processor 2.1 GHz PowerPC G5
512 MB
High speed internet (cable hook-up not phone)
On my side again it is slow too. I do ebay alot and wonder if that site is generally slow but all my other stuff is slow too.
My eMac was much faster.
I've done the following to help clean it up.
Empty Cache, Reset Safari, repaired permissions and used Yasu 1.3.6
Do I have to do all of this separately on the other user's account or will it recognize that I am doing Yasu from my side and also do the other user at the same time. It doesn't seem to matter anyways, I downloaded Yasu on my husband's side and ran it and it was as quick as lightening right away but then later in the day slowed down completely again.
I do have the warranty on this machine but I don't think I can get anybody to come out to my house. I may have to take it in which would be a pain.
Any ideas on this problem? I thought with the G5 it would smoke.
Appreciate any help
Allie
P.S. I am really a Mac novice and may not know what you are talking about so I appreciate your patience!

A good place to start would be buying some more RAM (Memory). Mac OS X likes memory. A lot. 512MB is hardly enough to make it purr. Additionally. Fast User Switching is a big memory hog. It runs the two user's environments at the same time, and that almost doubles memory usage. Another thing you may want to do is make sure all your software is up-to-date.
Hope this helps,

Hi Joey:
We'll try logging off each time we switch users. Have never tried that one.
I think all software is up-to-date. I don't see any Software Updates that I need to do from Apple.
How much Ram would you recommend?
Thank you
Allie

I would suggest above 1GB, and possibly up to 2GB.
I hope this helps you!

Just one more question Joey.
If I buy 2GB can I add that onto the 512 already? Will a G5 PPC hold that much?
If so, will the internet be really fast? Right now it is a sloth.
A.
Thanks so much for your time and advice.

Quick Question - Is your iMac a G5 with iSight, or just a regular G5? Also - 17" or 20" screen?
allieoop - May 31, 2006 - 5:17 pm
Hey Joey:
iSight: O.K. don't think I'm dumb.
iSight is the camera just above the screen right? I take pictures in front using Photo Booth. If that is right then I guess I have iSight. I've always called it the camera!
20" screen
Do I need to give that information when buying extra RAM?
Thanks Joey.

Just wanted to know so I could point you in the right direction. A G5 with iSight, 20" uses memory as quoted in the Apple Document:
"1. iMac G5 computers work with memory modules (DIMMs) that meet all of these
criteria: PC3200, 2.5V, unbuffered, 8-byte, nonparity, 184-pin, 400Mhz DDR SDRAM.
2. There are two RAM slots. The maximum amount of RAM you can install is 2 GB. You
can use RAM module sizes of 256 MB, 512 MB and 1 GB, in either slot.
3. DIMMs with any of the following features are not supported in the iMac G5 computer:
registers or buffers, PLLs, ECC, parity, or EDO RAM. "
The most important line is #1 - PC3200. Also, make sure it is not ECC (Error Check & Correcting) RAM.
My best advice would be browsing to macmall.com and finding the memory you need. There, you should be able to find the memory for your iMac, possibly without needing to know this gobble-dee-gook. I would recommend finding a 1GB chip. I wouldn't pay a cent over $150 if I were you, but up to $170 is acceptable.
Opening the iMac and replacing the memory is simple enough, you should be able to do it on your own. If you are intimidated by it, don't hesitate to get a hold of a tech-savvy friend, or even the local Apple store to install it. (Don't ask them to use their RAM, bring in your own and insist that they use it.)
Here's the link to the instructions for adding memory:

Again, I hope this helps,

Yes Joey that would be great.
I went on the Apple site and when I clicked on memory for imac with isight this is what I got. I'm under the impression that my computer has only one slot for additional memory.

I have been checking on the net for alternatives and have found this
on

....but I notice it states it is for a 17" screen so I would have to call to make sure.
What do you think???
amrcnidt961 - Jun 1, 2006 - 8:28 am
Definitely don't buy Apple's memory. Way too expensive. ($1,200? That almost sounds like an error!)
Anyway, That last one looked good. Make sure there's a good return policy just in case it does not work.
Good Luck!
