I cannot figure out what is going on. I think that I do not yet have the OS 10.4 version 10.4.1 and 10.4.2 updates. Is there a way to figure out whether these have been installed or not? I keep getting this error when I try and install the packages (manually downloaded from Apple's website) that say "you cannot install mac os x update on this volume. this volume does not meet the requirements for this update."

You can check About this Mac in the Apple menu to determine what version is currently installed on your computer. What Mac do you have? You can also look in the Software Update pane of System Preferences at Installed Updates.

That's what I thought, however, the Info pane says 10.4, not 10.4.1 or 10.4.2 as it should, and software update does NOT find the updates, and needless to say install them. As I said, I manually downloaded them from the site and they give me errors. I have a Powerbook G4 1ghz. I will check the installed updates though. Let me know what you think about this error.

If there was a problem installing either of the updates, you can go to the ./Library/Receipts folder and find one or both. The package files in this folder are not full installation packages; only contain info about what was installed where, hence "receipt."
If you remove them from the Receipts folder, Software Update should properly find them again.

I suppose the easiest thing might be to reinstall Tiger. The only possible alternative that comes to mind is to try to use Pacifist to manually reinstall 10.4.2 and see what happens.
