I would recommend that you seriously consider an Apple MacBook as opposed to these other PC's. The new Apple hardware is now Intel Core 2 Duo and as such can dual boot both WinXP/Vista and Mac OS X. You can even run WinXP/Vista in a virtual machine such as Parallels. i.e. WinXP/Vista in a window while you are running Mac OS X. If you plan to run a Virtual Machine, then get as much RAM as you can afford i.e. 2GB+. Yes, I know the Apple laptops are more expensive but not if you compare the same features with PC laptops. The price is pretty much the same. Apple does not produce low end soon to be obsolete computers so their costs are higher. When you go to sell it; it will hold it's resale value much better then regular PC's.
The Intel Core 2 Duo chip is the best CPU on the market for consumer PC's, Mac's, and laptops. It is more energy efficient than previous Intel chips yet provides the power of two processors. The latest MacBook Pro that just shipped Tuesday has the latest Intel Core 2 Duo revision which is even more power efficient then the MacBook's Intel Core 2 Duo.
I support thousands of PC's for a living and the number of threats from viruses, spyware, and other malware is unbelievably huge. Every week I am fixing broken WinXP/Vista systems that have been hacked by trojans and spyware.
Mac OS X is much more secure then either WinXP or Vista. There are very few viruses or other malware that run on Mac OS X. (Disclaimer: if you run Windows on a Mac then Windows is still vulnerable).
I have 15 computers at home of all types and operating systems (WinXP, Vista, Win2k3 Server, Sun SPARC Solaris, Linux, FreeBSD, etc.) and by far the most loved are the Apples.
I haven't felt this way about a computer since the early enthusiast years; late 80's early 90's. I rarely have a problem with the Apple computers and they are a joy to use. You can run all the mainstream software and all the Open Source Linux software and if you need to you can reboot into Windows or run it in a virtual machine. It truly is the best of 3 worlds!
Gaming? I know many gamers who are buying Mac's and dual booting to WinXP just to play games that are not available for Mac OS X.
