Hello,

I just changed my password with my internet provider and now I can't change my password in network preferences to match that with the ISP. Whenever I try to save the new password and apply the changes in the preferences, the preferences seems to add my old password onto the new one, creating a very long password.

I have checked in my keychain and deleted all possible passwords (is there a way to see the content of the keychain passwords? i.e., I can't see what the actual passwords are for the given application/website, etc. only the username). I also opened up netinfo manager but didn't find anything there I felt comfortable toying with.

Any help much appreciated

You may have a "permissions" problem.

The fix is simple, if that's the case. In the main Applications folder, there's a subfolder called Utilities. IN that folder is a program called Disk Utility. Run that program and specify that you want to repair permissions. After that completes, restart.

If that fails to cure the problem, delete that connection, and create a new one with the saame settings and the correct password.

It's also possible that you have a corrupted network prefs file; this could have happened during the install of 10.4 if you did something other than a clean install. But try the two things I have suggested before you worry about that.

I will add this as a followup to my first response, since you want to know "where to find things". This is from the 10.4 Help files:

"Most applications use special files to hold user data or preferences. Before you erase or reformat your hard disk or update your system software, be sure to back up these important files.

These are the data file locations for commonly used applications.

Mail data and settings: ~/Library/Mail/

iTunes data and settings: ~/Music/iTunes Music/

iPhoto data and settings: ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library/

AddressBook data and settings: ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook

iCal data and settings: ~/Library/Calendars/

Safari data and settings: ~/Library/Safari/

Fonts: ~/Library/Fonts/

Keychain data and settings: ~/Library/Keychains/

Stickies: ~/Library/StickiesDatabase

Other preferences: ~/Library/Preferences/
