Description:
This is a follow up to Tracking# 142242. Response really didn't answer my question.

I'm trying to find out if I can access a printer that is on a Windows PC system, in another city, for business purposes, and print documents directly to that printer using my Mac and possibly AppleTalk by selecting the desired printer through my Chooser.

I was referred to a link to buy ProwerPrintPro software, but it appears to me that this product addresses direct printing from a Mac to a PC printer as it includes a cable along with the software.

I'd like to be able to access my customers PC printer over a network using my existing bundled Mac software, if possible.

Thank you;
Kevin

Hi Kevin, and welcome to NoWonder Mac support!

Sure you can access it. There are only a number of things that must be satisfied first - and these things are reauired no matter if it is a PC or Mac printer. There are two general cases;
1) The printer is a networked printer and can communicate over TCP/IP (the "language" used by computers on the internet). If this is so then what you will have to do is to:
- Install the LaserWriter 8.5.1 software, available from Apple (this update is also included in the MacOS 8.1 update which I would recomend you do use in any case)
- Use the (installed) "Desktop printer utility" create a desktop printer for the remote printer. Done.

2) The printer is a non-networked printer or a printer that doesn't speak TCP/IP in which case you will have to make sure that they connect it to a computer acting as a print server. When the printer is available on the print server you can print to it (or to the server) just as I described in the other case above.

Good luck!
