Hello MacOSX support member,
I am trying to network my Lexmark Optra Rt+ printer via my Netgear Rangemax Router. I have a cross over Ethernet cable between the router and the printer and patch ethernet between the router and my MacMini. The router continues the orange light on Port 2, where the cable is plugged into. Trying to print I get the message: "Connecting to 192.168.1.1 on port 631... Network host '192.168.1.1' is busy; will retry in 20 seconds..."
How do I get this printer to print for me?
Thanks
Jan

That error is typical when your setup is incomplete or wrong. Read the router manual to be sure that the IPP protocol (internet printing protocol) is what you want to use. LPD is the most-common protocol. Then also see what the router's queue name is, to enter that in Printer Setup/Print & Fax prefs.
jverschu - Feb 19, 2008 - 10:14 pm
Hi there,
Thanks for the help. I am not very familiar with this networking and such... Where can I see the router's queue name... Is it the number on the bottom of the router: 192.168.1.1?? I am looking through the manual but cannot find anything on printing protocol.
Thanks and sorry for the inexperience...

I am looking through the OnLine manual and found this:
Autosensing Ethernet Connections with Auto Uplink
With its internal 4-port 10/100 switch, the WPN824 can connect to either a 10 Mbps standard
Ethernet network or a 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet network. Both the LAN and WAN interfaces are
autosensing and capable of full-duplex or half-duplex operation.
The router incorporates Auto UplinkTM technology. Each Ethernet port will automatically sense
whether the Ethernet cable plugged into the port should have a ‘normal’ connection such as to a
computer or an ‘uplink’ connection such as to a switch or hub. That port will then configure itself
to the correct configuration. This feature also eliminates the need to worry about crossover cables,
as Auto Uplink will accommodate either type of cable to make the right connection.
SO will the Cross Over cable that I have now installed be a PROBLEM?
And also the manual refers to my Mac maybe that needs configuring to work with the router:
Note: For
sharing files
and printers on
other types of
computers like
Macintosh or
Linux, see the
product
documentation
that came with
those
computers.
I hope that this is of help to you.

The crossover cable will not be a problem according to that info.
I'm sorry, I started you down the wrong path. I somehow missed that the printer is connected by ethernet. So, the incorrect setup/queue name is strictly for the printer. The printer is old enough that IPP isn't the right protocol. Use IP printing > LPD and enter the printer's IP address as well as the printer's queue name. I couldn't find a manual for the printer, but I found references that suggest print queue names of "prt0" or "prt1."
You should be able to press a test button on the back of the printer (near the ethernet port) to get a printout of printer IP address and maybe queue name (might call it port name).
jverschu - Feb 21, 2008 - 11:51 pm
Hello there,
Thanks for the help again... I am working long days AND need this printer to print at the same time... I did manage to print out an "Ethernet" page by going through the menus on the printer. No button next to the ethernet on the printer.
The printout gives me a listing for - Network Card 1 (MarkNet XL) - LexLink Protocol - Netware Protocol - AppleTalk Protocal and IP Protocol.
Under the AppleTalk Protocol it says:
Protocol Active: NO.
AppleTalk Name: IBM LaserPrinter 403A.
Under IP Protocol I see an IP address: 172.19.222.125
I have put that IP address in under Print and Fax in System Preferences and the computer tells me that it is a valid IP address. It automatically chooses a "generic Postscript printer". I change that to use the specific Optra Rt+ driver.
It sees the duplexer and dual feeder that the printer has installed. When trying to print, again the print box jumps up on the dock with the same error message. And also the router light remains orange... Under Print and Fax the printer is there with a little GREEN dot and the word idle underneath.
Your mentioned queue names of prt0 or prt1, where do I put those in...?
On the printout I have next to the IP address info also IP Netmask 255.255.255.0 and IP Gateway 172.19.222.1
I hope and pray that you can see light on the horizon as I need this unit to start doing what is was built to do: print!
Thanks
Jan
gsahli - Feb 22, 2008 - 6:36 am
OK, so the problem is that the printer has been setup for a different network. 172.19.222.xx is a different subnet - your router can't pass info to it, because it's not within the router's subnet of 192.168.1.xx. Now that you're familiar with the menus, you can do one of two things - change the IP address to one within your subnet - say, 192.168.1.20.
Or/and, turn appletalk on.
Then use that IP address for the LPD protocol on Mac, or use appletalk on Mac. When using Printer Setup/Print & Fax prefs to Add a printer using IP > LPD, you enter the queue name in the space provided. With the panel menu on the printer, you should also be able to find and confirm the queue name (sometimes called port name).
Also, I think postscript is optional on your printer. If the postscript driver choice doesn't work, you can also use the "HP Laserjet 5 Series/PCL, Gimp or Gutenprint" driver. (It's called slightly different names on different OS X versions)
Good luck.
jverschu - Feb 22, 2008 - 10:35 pm
Hi Gsahli,
I found the IP setting change menu and also managed to activate AppleTalk on the printer. However when closing the menu on exiting it gives me a warning: 73:X WARNING. GATEWAY SPECIFIED IS UNREACHABLE.
Thanks
Jan
gsahli - Feb 23, 2008 - 6:56 am
Please also change the gateway IP address to your router's address - 192.168.1.1, right?
Glad you noticed the warning.
jverschu - Feb 23, 2008 - 8:38 pm
Hi Gsahli,
Thanks for all your patience. Just a quick question regarding all the numbers. The router's bottom says that it uses 192.168.1.1
The printer's IP Protocol is set to 192.168.1.20.
The Gateway I set to 192.168.1.1
This sequence did not do it.
I synced the IP protocol to 192.168.1.1 to make them all the same. Reset up the printer in system preferences. Restarted the printer with again, no result. Orange light is still on on the printer.
I see that there is also a IP Netmask on the menus. It is set to 255.255.255.0
Can/should that also be changed?
Thanks again Gsahli!
Jan
gsahli - Feb 23, 2008 - 10:19 pm
To recap-
printer IP address 192.168.1.20
Gateway setting in printer 192.168.1.1
IP Netmask setting in printer 255.255.255.0 (this is correct and means that only the last part of 4 in the IP address will change)
Can you tell me everything the printer test printout says?
we're looking for the queue name/port name and whether or not raw socket/port 9100 is mentioned.
jverschu - Feb 24, 2008 - 12:19 am
Under the AppleTalk Protocol I see some changes.
Protocol Active: Yes
AppleTalk Name: IBM LaserPrinter 403A
AppleTalk Type: LaserWriter
AppleTalk Zone: *
Apple Talk Address: 43690.1
Under IP Protocol:
Protocol Active: Yes
BOOTP enabled: No
IP Address: 192.168.1.20
IP Netmask: 255.255.255.0
IP Gateway: 192.168.1.1
Other items on the printout are
Network Card 1(MarkNetXL),
A lot of info in there but nothing resembling what you are looking for like queue name or socket/port info
Let me know when the full details in here would be helpful too.
LexLink Protocol,
Protocol Active: No
Nickname: 0020000A8C7C
Netware Protocol,
Protocol Active: No
Login name: !LEX0020000A8C7C
NetWare Name: PSERVER
Thanks

Now that appletalk is active, I suggest you try that - much easier. After clicking Add/+ in Printer Setup/Print & Fax prefs, make sure you are looking at the Default Browser window - if not, click on the Default Browser icon in the upper left of the window. Within ~30 seconds the printer should show up.
If not, be sure that appletalk on the computer is on in Network prefs.
Try this with both drivers - generic postscript and HP Laserjet 5 CUPS (or "5 Series CUPS").
Thanks for hanging in there with me - many would have given up by now. I guess you realize you've been my eyes and ears here - I've never actually seen this model printer.
jverschu - Feb 24, 2008 - 11:40 pm
Thank YOU for hanging in there with ME...!!
We are making progress. The printer DID show up through AppleTalk. As did PageSender printer Fax and PageSender Email show up as available printers. The computer itself found the IBM Laserprinter 403A and Optra Rt+ driver with all the install options the printer has. The printer woke up as the computer and printer started "talking". All looked very good UNTILL I looked at the router and the light on port 2 is STILL bloody orange. When printing now a document however the printer DOES fire up but prints nothing.... Does not give an error message or beep, does fire up and than after awhile dies down again. Without printing anything, all paper trays are full of paper. The printer status list is empty too. Would THIS now have MAYBE something to do with the cross over ethernet cable I am using? There is communication BUT not completely... WEIRD.
Thanks again gsahli.
Jan
gsahli - Feb 25, 2008 - 7:25 am
Of course, buying a new patch cable is an easy troubleshooting step.
Even though the right driver for the Optra was found, I'd like you to try selecting the HP Laserjet 5 CUPS driver for troubleshooting. The symptoms sound like the postscript option isn't installed or isn't working.
jverschu - Feb 25, 2008 - 11:55 pm
Hi gsahli,
I installed the "generic Postcript printer" option and the printer PRINTS! Still the light is orange on the router. However with this driver and I doubt I can fully use the printer's different input trays... I did put another Ethernet cable between the printer and the router. I do not know whether or not it is a patch or cross over cable though, cannot make anything out of the writing on it. With the "new" cable, with the generic postcript driver, the printer prints, orange light on router. Switching back to the cross over cable: NO printing, the printer queue box jumps up on the dock. I switch the cables and the printer instantly starts printing again.
The cross over cable IS suspect now.
I suggest now that, tomorrow night, I will delete the existing printer setup and try to install the Optra driver from scratch and see what happens. Let me know of course when you see other steps.
So maybe the router NEEDS to have NO cross over cable?
Anyway, I suggest you take a well deserved break and wait for my next findings.
At ease soldier!
Jan
gsahli - Feb 26, 2008 - 7:08 am
That sounds promising.
jverschu - Feb 27, 2008 - 11:14 pm
Good evening gsahli,
Well, I thought to move ahead by eliminating the router and plug the printer direct into the computer. All the problems are identical. I remove the printer from the Print and Fax preferences. I re setup the printer. AppleTalk finds the IBM Laser 403A printer plus the Optra Rt+ driver. Printer fires up but prints nothing. Generic Postscript driver: the printer prints.
Now looking into the limitations on using the generic Postscript driver I noticed though that in the feeding options I can choose between my trays and feeders. HOWEVER... when choosing the feeder 1 for instance, the printer still pulls the page out of Tray 1... And no matter which feeding option I chose: it only pulls the paper out of ONE tray.
So we are coming to a dead end here I think, unless you see further solutions... I think we did what we could and some communication is happening but something is still array somewhere. My last hope/thought is to see if I can reach someone at Lexmark.
OH. One last finding though... When connecting the printer directly to the computer I noticed that despite the IP address on the printer was set to 192.168.1.20 under Networking in System Preferences the Ethernet's IP address was 169.254.205.46. Why is that?? Now that I replugged my Internet connection back into the computer the IP address changed to 192.168.1.2.
Does THAT give your brain something to continue this drama with...?
Thanks gsahli
Jan
gsahli - Feb 28, 2008 - 7:31 am
IP addresses starting with 169 mean self-assigned, not valid. If your computer is set to connect using DHCP (router assigns IP addresses), you will get that when not connected to the router.
I suspect you have a bad PPD (printer description file) for the Optra. Could it be that it was originally for OS 9?
I've observed before that a PPD written for Windows NT & 2000 is often good on OS X. You could look for that and experiment. Maybe ask Lexmark to email it to you.
Good luck.
jverschu - Feb 28, 2008 - 8:41 am
Well, thanks for this info again. I will look into it!

jverschu - Feb 28, 2008 - 8:55 am
Have to run out the door here. BUT I think you are on to something...
http://www.lexmark.com/lexmark/seque...8_0_en,00.html
Thanks gsahli!
jverschu - Feb 29, 2008 - 10:57 pm
Hi gsahli,
Well Lexmark, as far as I can follow them, says on the webpage that I sent you NOT to install anything else but the driver that came with Leopard. When accidentally having installed the driver, that I did I presume, that belongs to OSX Tiger, I would have to uninstall this driver first. Going through their instructions on how to uninstall I do not see what I am supposed to see.
They first of all talk about a USB connection. Ethernet would require the same..?
1. Remove the usb cable from your MAC. Remove the Lexmark printer queue by clicking the “-“ button when the printer is selected on the Printers and Faxes dialog in System preferences.
THAT I HAVE DONE.
Delete Lexmark folder found on /Library/Printers.
I DO NOT SEE A LEXMARK FOLDER THERE. WHAT I SEE THERE ARE TWO FILES. 172.19.222.125.app. AND PageSender-Fax.app.
Delete the file /System/Library/Extentions/LexmarkUSBMerge.kext.
THIS FILE I DID FIND AND JUST DELETED.
Then insert the Mac OS X 10.5 CD and click Optional Installs.
I just want to send this out to you as I received the second reminder email from MacOSX after which the ticket may get automatically closed. I do not know whether or not I get time tonight to play with the Optional Installs as they mention I would have to do.
So, until later.
Thanks gsahli
Jan
jverschu - Mar 1, 2008 - 8:34 pm
Hi Gsahli,
Managed to install the Lexmark drivers from the Leopard DVD as Lexmark says to do. However it picks again the generic Postscript driver as it sees the IBM LaserPrinter 403A. It does not automatically take the Optra Rt+ driver. Going through the list of available drivers I only see the Optra E, E+ and E220 available in the Optra series... All with Gutenprint v5.3.1 printed behind then.
Now, what's best to do. Take one of these 3 Optra drivers or contact Lexmark as it MAY be that this printer is simply not supported.
Thanks Gsahli
Jan
gsahli - Mar 2, 2008 - 2:41 pm
For network printing it is often the case that the correct model isn't detected - the real question is if the R+ is available to select.
I would ask Lexmark for the PPD.
But it won't hurt to try any other driver like those Optra Gutenprint ones.
jverschu - Mar 2, 2008 - 10:28 pm
Hi Gsahli,
Yeah, the thing is that there is no Rt+ or R+ in the list to select from.
I sent Lexmark techsupport the question whether or not they have a driver available for Leopard for this printer at all OR what other driver to use instead. I hope they respond tomorrow. I did not ask for the PPD in my email to them. Will do so depending on their reponse. Also your Gutenprint options I will dive into after hearing from Lexmark. Sorry for all this as the original problem was having the OSX Tiger driver installed apparently!!
Thanks
Jan
jverschu - Mar 4, 2008 - 10:51 pm
Hi Gsahli,
Nothing from Lexmark. I'll try and phone them tomorrow.
Thanks
Jan
gsahli - Mar 6, 2008 - 8:43 am
I have an Optra R plus PPD that I think will work. I extracted it from a Windows NT download. Windows NT PPDs are known to work on OS X.
Send me an email at sahlgre at iit decimal edu, and I'll send it back to you.
BTW - I used the Optra R plus installer to install on my OS X 10.4 system, and it didn't put a network-capable driver on my system, either (not in the list). So, I believe there is some part of the driver that uses a proprietary comm protocol - ie, it won't work.
jverschu - Mar 6, 2008 - 11:34 pm
Hi Gregory,
Thanks for sending the file. I am just surprised at the apparent file size... Only 25.3 KB...
I went to Lexmark's site and saw under the NT files for the Optra Rt+ a PPD driver also. Not that big either though. Just wondering which you expect to give me the best result.
This is what I saw there. BUT it's an EXE file extension..
Yours ends with .ppd....
Confused....
Lexmark_AldusPPD_en.exe Version 9.5
PageMaker PostScript Level 3 Driver for Windows 3.x, 9x, Me, NT 4.0, 2000 and XP
File Size: 509.73 KB
Estimated Download Time - Dial-Up (56 Kbps) : 2 min
jverschu - Mar 6, 2008 - 11:36 pm
I guess you did some tricks to the original driver to turn it into this ppd thing...
I will try this tomorrow night. Have to get some sleep here.
Thanks again!
Jan
gsahli - Mar 7, 2008 - 2:49 pm
(I'm really just posting here to keep your ticket open...)
Yes, I downloaded a Windows NT .exe file and Stuffit expander was able to extract PPD files from it.
I have confirmed on my system (10.4.11) that Optra plus is available now for network printing -- it has lots of options available, too! Wish I had one of those.
jverschu - Mar 8, 2008 - 10:10 pm
Yes, keep that thread going!

I installed your driver the same night I mentioned to you that "I was going to do it tomorrow"... I did print one copy. Now I am testing to see whether or not I can access my other trays and feeder especially. As that feeder I NEED to be able to print vinyl labels that have to go straight through the printer without any looping or bending. Well the printer fires up again as if it is starting a print job. But nothing happens, not even an error message and also the engine dies down again after a while, the print job disappearing out of the queue as if all is well in print land...
The thing is that the printer is still in good working order and will print from my old windows box. So for my label printing I will have to hang onto my huge windows box (pentium 1 old computer!!) now for just that. I can print from my MacMini with the generic Postscript driver for basic office printing. No envelops either I would think. So the final question would be whether or not Lexmark will ever write a driver for Leopard for this printer. You mentioned that Lexmark just now issued a network driver for the Rt+ for Tiger? When that is the case... I may be in for a long wait.
I presume that we now have truely exhausted all options. Apart from taking over Lexmark where I can serve you tea and cookies while YOU write me a driver?
Thanks Gregory,
Jan
gsahli - Mar 9, 2008 - 7:20 am
The only thing I can suggest is to try "configuring" the options. In Print & Fax, highlight the printer and click Options and Supplies, then click Driver. You should be able to set options there.
Good luck.
jverschu - Mar 10, 2008 - 12:01 am
Just put your ppd driver back on the printer. But as soon as I click on Options and Supplies all hangs for a bit and then "System Preferences unexpectedly had to close" or something of that nature... Tried it again and it repeats itself.
I will restart the system tomorrow and retry.
Thanks Gregory,
Jan
gsahli - Mar 10, 2008 - 7:48 am
If that happens again, startup with your OS X Install dvd (hold c key until you're sure it's using the DVD), then find Disk Utility and repair the hard drive.
jverschu - Mar 10, 2008 - 9:50 pm
Restarted and again when pressing Options and Supplies, System Preferences closes "unexpectedly".
Put in the Leopard DVD, shut the computer down. Pressed the ON button on the back and with a 2 second delay went to the C key to hold it down. Computer boots up into OSX...
Now I do a restart and keep holding the C key down: the Leopard star sky pops up with the languages choice list. Next screen talks about Installing OSX....
Not what we want now is it? Or is it?
I am totally new to the Mac but my girlfriend just mentioned that when System Preferences closes like that I'd be looking at serious problems. Purchased new last November... Can't print. My 11 year old Pentium works just fine.... 8 year old HD in there I think now... What's your thought what is going on here Gregory?
Thanks multifold!
Jan
gsahli - Mar 11, 2008 - 7:10 am
I think you have a file corrupted - not time to panic yet.
About the install DVD - yes, you want to choose language, then after that you'll see the top (Finder) menus. Find Disk Utility in those, and use it to repair the hard drive.
jverschu - Mar 11, 2008 - 8:55 am
Thanks for calming me down...
I DID not see any other option than to back out and hold the on/off button for 5 seconds to get out of the menus.. Must look sharper tonight.
Thanks
Jan
jverschu - Mar 11, 2008 - 9:08 am
Oh "the girlfriend" again mentioned, over the phone that my screen should look totally different when booting up on the DVD... I have by the way that Leopard starry night sky in the background when I get that languages screen and after that the install screen. All okay as far as you know..? I will have time hopefully tonight to let the disk repair run overnight.
Thanks Gregory.
Jan
gsahli - Mar 11, 2008 - 9:37 am
So far so good - after selecting language, you get the Finder menus - and the install dialog. Just Don't click Continue in the installer.
jverschu - Mar 11, 2008 - 9:45 pm
Trying for an hour here to boot up on the DVD. The computer has had long reboots for the last two weeks. 5 minutes or longer. Shutting down takes a long time. Holding the c key either while restarting or from cold boot just won't pick up the DVD... When turning the unit OFF (as this is what I did last) I hold the c key and turn the computer on afterwards. No go. Then I just turn the computer on and hold the c key with a 2 second delay. Neither option does it. I will keep on trying as last night it was also not that straight forward but it took the DVD after the 3rd? try.
Man, where is this going. Feels like my windows days...
Thanks Gregory

Hi, I found on the internet that I could set in system preferences that I can force the computer to boot from the DVD. I repaired and verified disk permissions, but now the computer constantly boots from the DVD. How do I get the computer to quit doing that and how do I get the DVD out of the drive?
Thanks,
Pam
Jan's Girlfriend (because he can't access his computer/boot up the system, or access the internet at the moment).
jverschu - Mar 12, 2008 - 12:09 am
Hi Gregory,
I am back among the living! With the girlfriend researching the internet we figured out that with holding the mouse key I can force the DVD out.
I repaired the disk, verified the disk, repaired disk permissions and verified disk permission. The disk was OK, but on the last 2 processes I got a long list of "ACL found but not expected" in System Library User template and in Application Utilities, Application and Library....
On the top of the ACL listing it said: Permissions differ on "private/var/log/secure.log, should be-rw-----,th......"
AND. Back to the printer. When in System Preferences going to my printer and clicking on Options and Supplies.... the same shutting down of System Preferences happens. Unexpectedly terminated, you want to relaunch. Sent the problem again to Apple.
Pff quite the night with no apparent progress.
What's next doctor?
Re-Install???
Thanks Gregory
Jan
gsahli - Mar 12, 2008 - 7:19 am
Yes, I recommend you reinstall using the Archive & Install option. As you go through the installer dialog, the first time you see the Options button (I think I remember it's on the upper left), click Options and then select Archive & Install. Archive & Install keeps your user files and "most" of your applications - applications that put files into the system area will have to be reinstalled. Sorry, I don't have a list of which applications that might be...
Good luck.
jverschu - Mar 12, 2008 - 9:38 am
I have TimeMachine running on a LaCie drive. Would any restore be an option? But main question for me is: this is a fresh Leopard install on a new MacMini. I have never ever had to do this with my Windows 95 and later 98 system.... Not after 5 months anyway.. Is this normal? I am a light business user. No video editing and gaming going on here...
Thanks Gregory,
Jan
gsahli - Mar 12, 2008 - 11:29 am
Oh, I didn't even think of Time Machine. Good idea. Worth a try.
A corrupted file doesn't happen all that often - but when it does we have to resort to things like reinstall, because OS X is huge - well over 100,000 files - and we don't have tools to figure out which file is bad.
jverschu - Mar 12, 2008 - 9:14 pm
How to work with TimeMachine in this case... Remember I am super new and when screwing things up here I am in trouble. Backing up is the first thing I would like you to go through with me here..
Address Book file
Safari bookmarks
And Mail emails....
All data is kinda straight forward.
But the Address Book contents was a HELL for me to get that over from my windows machine and now it is updated on the Mac while I slowly am moving over to this MacMini.
Thanking never stops...
jverschu - Mar 12, 2008 - 9:17 pm
What I need is where those files (Address Book, Bookmarks and Email) are located...
gsahli - Mar 12, 2008 - 9:35 pm
OK, now we are getting out of my area of knowledge - I don't have Leopard.
I think I should send you back to the pool of Techs, to see who else can help with this.
jverschu - Mar 12, 2008 - 9:51 pm
WOULD installing the generic Postscript driver give me a solution MAYBE. In other words could the .ppd driver now that is in there causing the hangup....
And when going to TimeMachine, and backing up things, should I just post the question or are you forwarding me on?
PLUS.. please try and keep the thread open regarding the last attempts for the printer. I do not know when I will get the time to get everything ready to start overwriting things OR reinstalling maybe...
Thanks Gregory,
In case I loose you: THANKS!!
Jan
jverschu - Mar 13, 2008 - 10:31 pm
Hi Gregory,
Just thinking here today. BEST is to just do a complete reinstall, it is safest and best in the end. Our printer options are running very thin now and I must thank you for hanging in there so long for me and working so hard to find a solution. I must prepare for the reinstall and do it when I have the time. So let's say goodbye for now and close this thread. YOU have given me more than you should of your time and helped me enormously. THANK YOU and I hope that your other tech help is less frustrating than this one must have been for you!!
Thanks and all the best
Jan
