I have a Mac G4 running OS10.4 but with no modem. I have connected the networking to a PC running XP through a hub and it is working ok. I want to use my dial-up modem in the XP machine to connect to the internet but I am now sure what the settings are.
As far as I know the PC is using DHCP but I am not sure. The mac can read my home folder on the PC and vice virsa but still cannot connect to the internet. Any ideas would be appreciated and if you could show me exactly what to alter as I have a bit of trouble setting up a network. Most of it is just luck and I am not really sure what I am doing on either machine. Thank you,
Allan

Hello Allan
thanks for using macosx.com and i will try to advise and assist you as best I can.
OK the PC is connected to the 'net yes? How? Dial up? Broadband?
If Broadband how is it connected? USB "modem" or via modem/router/hub?
If it is using dial up you are most likely wasting your time - it can be done but isn't worth it...
If it is using bb over a basic usb modem or even a hub then you may be better off eiter a) swapping round (ie connect the Mac to the usb modem and then share it from the Mac - i have usually found this easier to do)
If your PC is actually connected to a modem/router then you don't need to connect to the PC at all - connect direct to the modem router and you should be online in mere seconds
I think you need to clarify the situation for me.. in your own words and go as slowly as necessary - there is no time limit here... (well, barring the 36 hrs between posts "reminder" that is...)
Come back and explain the setup as simply and straight forwardly as you can and I will see if I can explain it more clearly (if needed)

Thank you for your reply. As I explained above, my PC is connected to the internet through a dial-up modem of which I am quite happy. The Mac does not have any modem installed, hence my reason for having to use the PC for internet connection.
Even though the network works on both computers and I can read one from the other, I may have to alter some settings in the XP machine before it will use the DHCP protocol and that probably means I will have to alter the settings in the Mac after.
I am quite happy with this arrangement and I have successfully connected the Mac this way in the past but I have since had trouble with the PC and have had to reinstall XP from scratch and lost all the previous settings and cannot remember how to get them back.
I really need the settings for both machines to make sure they are both using DHCP.
Thank you,
Allan

Thank you for your reply...
I am much clearer on what you wish to achieve and why...
Rather than try to explain the whole setup here I will point you to these useful pages which should help you.
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/ http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics_other
those should get you up and running
Hope that helps

Thank you.
That was all I needed. The correct IP numbers which I got form the 'annoyances' web page. My numbers were ok for the network but not for ICS.
I will close this ticket after I send the response.
