Hello,
I just installed a new hard drive because my original one went bad (after a year and 3 months or so...so that sucks, but it happens). so I reconnected everything and put it all back together. now, when i go to put in the OS cd's and run the installation from the CD...I turn on the power, and hold down the "c" key, like it says to do on the CD. it just goes to the white apple screen (there usually is the little spinning thing at the bottom, but this time it's just the white screen and the gray apple icon). I'm curious if there is something that I have to do in order to partition the hard drive or format it before I can run the installation CD's. I just assumed that the formatting and such would all be part of the installation process from the CD's...but maybe not, figured I should just ask the pro's. any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks alot,
Jeremy Hewitt

Hi Jeremy,
My name is Eddy and I'll try my best to help you along with your new hdd problem.
First I'll need some info about what we are dealing with please. I need to know what type of Mac and the OS that you were running before you changed the HDD = (hard drive).
What size is the new HDD and what size was the old HDD. Also what brand of new HDD did you buy? What OS disk are you tring to boot from? Also can you try and remember the history of what happen and why you felt the HDD was bad.
Sorry for all the questions but in order for me to be of any help I'll need to know whats going on in detail.
Waiting on your reply.
Regards
Eddy

...alright here we go then...
first, i have an ibook g4 60 gig HDD, i did some research to find out what kind of HDD's apple uses for there ibooks, and i learned that/bought an 80 gig TOSHIBA Super Slimline MK8025GAS (HDD2188) 80GB 4200 RPM Notebook Hard Drive - OEM. before i put in the new HDD, i had Mac OS 10.3.? (i think .9) - it was the latest updates that go along with 10.3...i havent purchased 10.4 yet. the OS disks that i'm trying to put in are the original cd's that came with the computer a year and a few months ago.
as far as the problems i've been having, is that things like preferences weren't saving, files weren't saving, it kept freezing any time i'd open system preferences or if i were to open more than like 2 programs, so i took the computer in to be looked at in this local store who works with apples...and he said that it probably wasnt the hard drive causing me any problems, so he said that the problem was probably just a corrupted file within the OS files somewhere, so he said the only way to fix it is to reinstall the OS from the disks...so i had him do that, first trying to save my files, which didnt end up happening, so he did the entire erase and install, and it worked for about 10 minutes when i got it back, just as normally would, then it started to do the same exact problems, so i knew that it wasnt corrupted files, so i just decided to elimate the possibility that it is the HDD, so i put the new one in...so now i have in the new hard drive and i'm wondering what specifically i have to do in order to get it up and working, i tried to put the OS disk's in and power up with the "c" key down, but all it does is go to this dark gray screen where there is a folder flashing for the OS...so i hit "esc" and it goes on to the white apple logo screen, and just stays there, so i'm wondering if i have to format the HDD at all, or do anything to get this up and running...please help, thank you very much!
if you have any other questions, feel free to let me know and i'll do my best to explain them as best as i can.
thanks again,
Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,
Are your tring to install OS X or OS 9 ? What OS came with the ibook from apple? Sounds to me like you have some other problem other then a HDD going bad. Lets see if we can get a OS back on the new HDD. As for the format, You will need to format the HDD during the install to Mac OS Extended . It will advise you to format the drive before you can install the OS.
