when i transferred over my files from my dual 1 gig G4 to my new imac I didn't transfer applications because I wanted to see what I needed from my old set up and didn't want a lot of redundant files(apps). There are a few apps that I would like to transfer now and was wondering if there's a way to use the set up assistant that first appeared when I started up the new mac have it transfer over what I need since those files have associated files that were loaded wherever..

Thanks,
sherry

Hello Sherry

thanks for using us here at macosx.com and I will do my best to assist you

The short answer is YES... most of us never properly read the screen text that comes up when the Migration Assistant kicks in... we are usually too fired up about getting the new Mac up and running! If you actually read it carefully it tells you how to rerun it later should you want to import more stuff etc.

FWIW when I set up a new Mac now I don't run the Migration Assistant the first time it appears... I say no thanks and create a nice clean new Admin Account... then once I am happy that is working I go into Applications/Utilities where the Migration Assistant (Wizard for Windows refugees) lives...

Simply launch the MA from there and you are good to go... (you will of course need the old Mac attached in FW Target Disk mode, or a disk image of said HDD mounted or a clone on an external etc.)

I am not sure that you can pick and choose what Apps it imports... but it will offer to not overwrite newer ones already on the new Mac...

Hope that helps - and btw MA is one of the greatest things Apple ever introduced... and I don't care if they stole it from someone else or not... but my user account has now basically made it from 10.2 -10.3-10.4-10.5 and from a variety of G4 towers to at various times several G4 iBooks, a G5 iMac, a couple of G5 DP towers, a CD MacBook, a couple of C2D MacBooks and a last gen white C2D iMac... usually without hitch (ok so I had some issues with 10.5 - but that wasn't MA it was me going bleeding edge with 10.5.0, I should have known better really!)

Hope that helps you... if you get stuck come back to me!

Hi and thank you for the help. i didn't have a chance to get back into things till today but did try the MA assist... alas...it didn't let me choose the apps to bring over and i was afraid to just bring em all over since there would probably be a lot of muck in it. My problem was with a "first class server" program that i use to access a beta bbs for Pro Tools. But I still have my tiger set up on the laptop so I was able to get what I needed via that.... still can't seem to get that program to work on this Imac even after i took over the app and files independently..just keeps quitting and so i've emailed the powers that be and asked if there's an issue with mac intels or if there was updated site for me to download it at..i'll just do a clean install of it.
Glad to have found you guys and as I get further into it i'll be sure to return...and if this blasted writers strike ends soon, i'll make a donation:-)
Thanks again,
sherry
