Sir,
I just installed ITunes upgrade. Now there's a grand problem, missing files, folders and the "Desktop" is in the trash, I can't get it out. I'm 76 but don't think I've lost it this fast, what happened?
Sincerely,
Don

hello Don,

I'm Tom and I will try to assist you.

Before I can help you I need to understand your problem a little more.

What files and folders are missing exactly?

You say the desktop is in the trash. Is this just a folder named "Desktop"? is there anything in this folder?

Can you describe in more detail the problems you are suffering.

When software is upgraded there are obviously files and folders etc that are replaced by the new ones. it is quite ok to see "strange" files or folders in the trash after an upgrade.

Regards

Tom

Hi Don,

I find it unlikely that itunes installer would cause this to happen. It would be useful if you could remember what else you were doing around the time that could have caused this to happen.

As you have found, you cannot use any file that is in the trash.

Can you launch itunes (either via the dock or double clicking itunes in your applications folder)? If you can, is all your music in place - or do you have an "empty" library?

Can you use your palm device in the usual way?

In your home folder (usually called after your name) is there a desktop folder in there? if not can you drag the desktop folder from the trash to your home folder (it should "copy" over)? If not what does the error message say - or what happens when you try?

I shall leave it at that for now. Don't want to overwhelm you with questions! Its a bit of an odd one this but I'm sure we'll get to the bottom of things eventually. It would be so much easier if I could sit at your computer personally! If you know anyone who is handy with a mac it could be quicker for you to get them to come round to you. If there's no-one available, don't worry we'll sort things out together in time.

One more Q: Can you also tell me what OS you are running?

Regards

Tom

Hi Tom,
I'm running system 10.3.9, a G4 400MHz with 896MB of ram.
When I try to relocate the Desktop folder from the trash to anywhere, the message; "You cannot move the Desktop. The system requires an item by this name in this location." appears.

When launching iTunes from the dock, there's a new iTunes (4.7.1) with an empty Library.

In the home folder (donmcilrath) there's a “desktop” folder I added. Then copied the Desktop folder files from the trash to the desktop, then dropped them in there, but there's no icon on it. The files will open from that desktop folder.

When trying to sync with the Palm there's the message "Transport Monitor conduit manager could not be found, it must be located in the same folder....."

My Palm works just fine but cannot update any files because the preferences point to files in the trash.

I started with the Macintosh when they came out. First I had an Apple integer then an Apple IIe and so on. When using the old operating system I was able to repair most all Mac problems, System 10 has thrown me a nasty curve. In system pre-X I helped MANY people with their Mac problems. It seems the older I get the smarter I’m not.

There’s an Apple tech support place in Phoenix but they charge 90.00 an hour, and I have to take my Mac to them and pick it up. My plan is to send your company the money when and if you are able to use me to repair it.

One more thing, is there a folder hierarchy for the Palm items, My Documents (palm files) etc?

Sincerely,
Don

Hi Don,

I think we all had the learning curve with OS X! I find it much better to get on with now though - especially with the recent macs with huge hard disks and demanding software!

As you are probably aware, the desktop folder in your home folder contains everything on your desktop (a big change from os9 - where this folder was essentially "hidden") It makes sense if you run multiple users.

I shall try and address the various points you raise...

It seems your itunes was not updated to 4.8 then. If all your itunes music is in the trash and assuming you can drag it out without problems then all will be well soon. All you itunes stuff should be stored in Homefolder->Music->iTunes->itunes music

The itunes music folder has probably been created, with nothing in it after you launched itunes. replace this folder with the one from the trash. Launching itunes should reveal all your music again. playlists etc may not be there but you may find replacing the created files in itunes folder (in Music folder) with the same named files in the trash brings things back to normal. The other way you can get your tunes back is to drag the "itunes music" folder first from the trash to your desktop and then drag the folder to "Library" in your open itunes window - itunes should sort everything out for you. (you'll need to re-launch itunes after any folder changes)

Once itunes is back to normal I'm sure it will be safe to update the software to 4.8 if you so wish.

As for the desktop folder in your home folder, it should get the right icon once you have restarted the computer, or if it doesn't there will be a new desktop folder created.

Out of pure luck, I too have a palm device. I shall try and list where my stuff is for you. Hopefully this will be same as what your system is expecting!

there is a folder "Palm" in the Applications folder. this contains the applications/folders:
Add-on (folder)
Conduit Manager
Documentation (folder)
Hotsync Manager
Note Pad
Palm OS Updates (folder)
Palm Setup Assistant
Send To Handheld
transport Monitor
Voice Memo

There is another "Palm" folder In the Documents Folder, in my home folder.
In this "Palm" folder is a folder called "Users". In "Users" there is a file called "Palm Users" and a folder called "Thomas O'Carroll"
In Thomas O'Carroll there is...
Backups (folder)
Conduit Data
Conduit Settings (folder)
Files to Install (folder)
Hotsync Log
Note Pad (folder)
Photos (folder)
Voice memo (folder)

Also (takes another breath), In the root level of your hard drive (not home folder) in the Library->Application Support folder is a folder called Palm Desktop. this folder on my system is empty.

Note I do not use my palm device now so things may well be a little out of date!

If there is anything else in the trash i suggest you place it in a suitable folder out of the trash. If you find you need it in the future you'll know where it is. And remember most applications can be reinstalled so if you delete them its not the end of the world. its only the files or data that is lost for good.

Good luck with it all!

let me know how you get on and feel free to ask about anything here you don't understand (its hard putting folder hierarchy in english isn't it!) - or about any other files you may find in your trash!

Regards

Tom

ps
Just for the record, all us support techs here are voluntary (!). A nice compliment in the feedback form is all thats needed instead of payment:-)
