TICKET ARCHIVE -> New Powerbook won't stay awake! (Sleep problem)

Greetings! First the problem, then my stats.

I have a new 15" 1.5ghz Powerbook which has been functioning pretty well for 5 months. But now it keeps going into sleep-mode after only 5 seconds or so of active use. I keep hitting the space bar to wake it up, and it goes right back to sleep. I've checked the System Preference settings for Energy Saving, Screen Saver and Display modes, and all is as it should be. It will stay awake if I boot up with a Start-up disk, which leads me to think it is a software or perhaps a virus problem. The problem was infrequent at first, but has gotten worse over a two-month period, and now is chronic. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

--I am operating OS 10.4.4 (came loaded), but my Start-up disk (which grants me access to Disk Utility) only has 10.3.7

--I've tried using Disk Utility to check/repair the drive. A message appears in the repair log: "Invalid leaf record count (it should be 3 instead of 222)". At the end of the repair, it indicates it attempted repair on 2 volumes, that one HFS volume was repaired, and that one volume could not be repaired. I have run it through Disk Repair a few times, and each time the same messages come up, which leads me to believe that the "unrepaired" volume keeps altering the repaired volume.

--I have just used Permission Repairs 3 times (quiting then restarting Disk Utilities each time) and I get the same message each time: "We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./System/Library/Filesystems/cd9660.fs/cd9660.util. New permissions are 33261." So no matter that it has already done this procedure before, just like with the Disk Repair, it seems to need the same alterations each time!

Use console.app to look in your system log.
Look for any erros that mention PMU, or temperature sensors.


My 17" 1.67 had a temp. sensor flake out where the powerbook thought it was ALWAYS overheating and it had the constant "go to sleep" problem you describe.

After that run the Apple hardware tests that cam with your notebook, the should pickup any serious errors.

Hi Michael-- it looks like you nailed it right on the head! The system log shows repeated "sleeps" due to temperature sensor overload. The laptop is still under warranty, and I've never had experience with Apple's repair services-- what do you recommend?

If you live close to an apple store, you can go to the **cough cough** genius bar. They'll send it out for you.


If not you just call apple up, give then all your info. They will send out a box for you to ship it to them in. The first time I had my powerbook in it took a total of seven days to get it back from when I shipped it out.

Oh, back up ALL your data too. They are within the support contract agreement to wipe the HDD at will.


Good luck. I wish the 1.5-1.67 G4 laptops were better but they all seem to have the same problems. I have had mine in 3 times now
