Hello I'm new to macs. Let me take this moment to say I love my PC(New Athlon 64x series)! But this mac has a small hard drive and I would like to replace it. Can I just buy a new hard drive and install the OS and just copy all of my other directories(will this bring over my apps since I don't think macs use registries). Or the old fashion reinstall of all my apps or is there something like Norton's ghost for macs.

Clifton,

My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you.

First, I need to know the model of your Mac so I can point you in the right direction for a new hard drive.

Then there are different options in getting that new drive going. First, you will need to do a format of the drive, and then install the OS. Depending on what version OS you will be using will depend on the way to go about it.

Depending on what you have available on that Mac, you can burn a CD or DVD with all your files. There is a couple of programs that can copy all those files - including the invisible ones making it easier to move those files on to the new drive. Again, this depends on what OS you have. Once I know that I can recommend the program and give you the step by step.

Clifton,

Here is a web page with your choice of hard drives.
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/3.5-IDE-ATA/

I do suggest you stay away from Seagate's drives that are larger than 120GB as there is a problem with those large drives and OS X.

What you need is SuperDuper to clone your Home folder and Library. Create a Disk Image with Disk Utility (Applications>Utilities) - then user Super Duper to clone your Home folder and Library Folder (the one on your hard drive sitting by itself).
Now burn the image file and your Applications folder to a CD or DVD. (your DVD burner can do either one).
Note: if you have the installers for your programs, you can just do a fresh install, rather than copy over.

If you have OS 9 installed and OS 9 applications - then you may want to copy those as well. You do not need to clone those folders.

Once done, you can switch hard drives. --- Or just install the new one - your tower should have a spot right above the original hard drive for a second one. You should also have additional cable ribbons and power wires for a second drive. The one thing you do need to do is decide which drive you want to be the master and the slave and change the jumpers accordingly.

It does not matter which drive will be the start up drive, but you can not have two master drives.

Now start up the computer with Tiger DVD and do not click on the installer screen. Instead go to the Installer Menu and select Disk Utility.

When that opens, you need to select your new drive from the side bar at the left, then click on Erase tab and have it erase and format the drive using Mac OS Extended. It is your choice whether you want it journaled or not.

Once done, click on the First aid tab and repair the drive.

Now you can quit Disk Utility and proceed with the installation.

Once done, and restarted the setup assistant will come up and get you started. Just use the same user name and password as you have now.

Go to the Applications>Utilities and have Disk Utility repair permissions.

Now you can get the 10.4 updates. After they are installed, repair permissions again.

Now you will have a new Home folder, etc. All you need to do is compare the backed up CD/DVD to the new, and move over the files that you want from back up to new drive.

Let me know if you need more information, or a better/clearer explanation.
