OS Version: MacOS 8.5.1

Description:
HELP! After 2 days of installation effort, I think I've finally gotten 8.5.1 up and running with all my previous programs and applications working again. But now I can use the menu bar Restart or Shutdown...the machine just freezes. I can "force" the restart but to shutdown I have to pull the plug. I've rebuilt my desktop a couple of times and also zapped the PRAM. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I've also had a freezing problem when I tried to have my FMRadio from Lacie open as a Startup item. Wasn't a problem under 7.5.5, but apparently the new and improved 8.5.1 can't handle it? Radio still works fine when I "manually" open...but why?

My impression so far...not sure why I spent the $99 for a "new computer". The old one using 7.5.5 was working great....I'm afraid I violated the old adage "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

Hope some one can help and would sincerely appreciate E-mail response!

Carl

Dear swedberg,
Mac8.5.1 is actually a good upgrade. Open Transport is improved and Type 11 errors are completely eliminated. MacOS 8.5.1 makes more efficient use of the Control Panel by grouping related control panels into one heading (i.e. Modem and PPP under Remote Access)

Many of your problems might be eliminated by simply installing updated versions of your programs. Starting with 8.1, the MacOS uses HFS+ on your hard drive. This is suppose to make more efficient use of disk space. However, older programs may not be compatible within this enviroment. Some examples include versions of Norton Utilites less than 4.0, and Techtool Pro (except latest version.)

There are some programs that may not be compatible even with the latest version. Two examples are Acrobat Exchange and Adobe Type Reunion, although Adobe has just released an update for ATR.

To combat freezing, there are three things you can try: directly allocating more memory to the programs affected, decreasing your Disk Cache in the Memory Control Panel (Be aware your computer may run slower), switching to MacOS 8.5.1 extensions in your Extensions Manager. The latter is useful to test for extension conflicts.

If you are experiencing freezing upon Shut Down, you may need to trash your Finder Preference files.
These included Finder Preferences, Mac OS Preferences, and System Preferences. Place these the Trash Can, but don't empty until after you restart.
