Knowledge Level: Expert but stumped
Problem: Combination
Computer Type: Apple, Iomega
Model: Mac OS 8.5, Iomega Driver 6.0.1
RAM: 65+
RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: MacOS 8.5
Description:
I did a clean install of OS 8.5 on my PowerBook 3400, after which the computer refused to start up. I got a gray screen with a cursor, and that's it. After disconecting my Zip Drive (my only SCSI Device), the computer started up fine. I later found that if I unplugged my zip's power cable after pressing the startup key and then plugging it back in after the Happy Mac icon appeared, things worked fine. I have tried zapping the PRAM multiple times with both the zip connected and diconnected, but the problem persists. The computer also freezes at shutdown; after finishing all shutdown procedures, the screen goes dark blue and stays there. This may be a seperate problem, but I thought I'd include it in case it was not. Thank you for your help.

It appears that your mac is trying to boot up off the zip drive.
Do you have a disk in your zip drive? It is possible that you have the zip disk selected as your startup disk (in the Startup Disk control panel). If there is no bootable system folder on the zip cartridge, your mac will have difficulty starting up. Change the settings in your Startup Disk Control Panel.
Also, it is a good idea to eject any disk in the zip drive before you startup.
That will assure that the computer will not try to read from the zip drive while booting up.
You wrote that you "unplugged the zip's power cable after pressing the startup key and then plugging it back in after the Happy Mac icon appeared": You should not unplug or plug in any cables when your mac is turned on! It is not a good idea (except in dire emergency)--it could damage your hardware. Shut down before connecting/disconnecting any cables!
Re: all startup and shutdown problems:
Look in your Startup Items folder and Shutdown Items folder (in your System Folder) for any files or aliases that may be causing conflicts.
Check for any other possible extensions conflicts.
