I setup a printserver(Netgear PS121, the process was pretty bad). Anyway, I got my 2 windows computers setup pretty easily. I just did an add new printer, found it on the network, set the printer type and was done. Now on mac I don't know how to do this. From everythign i've read it should show up when I enter Print & Fax in System settings. I don't see anything, so I went to the + to add a printer. There's nothing under default browser, so I click IP Printer and all I can do is choose to print to a computer over the internet(I think). The problem I think I'm having is that the Workgroup for our network and the one I specified on the printserver was "HOUSE". I have no idea how networking works, but I'm pretty sure I have to tell it this somewhere. Is there any easy to do this?
The former didn't work for me. I tried doing this and it still didn't see anything. The printserver is on a specific Workgroup called "HOUSE", so far I think I've managed to get my mac to also get onto the house workgroup through the Directory Access app and configured SMB/CIFS, but I still can't see fileshares on other machines in that workgroup so I'll have to figure out more about Samba when I have time.
I'm following you on the second option, but I got stuck when I was trying to select the printer model. It didn't even have anything for Samsung so I had to use Generic PostScript Printer, which so far didn't work. Any idea where I could go to update printer drivers? I tried Software Update and didn't get much. I tried going to "other" and it poped up finder going to network, but I couldn't find it because my network isn't fully working.
TCP stands for Transmission Control Protocol, TCP handles how the packets are broken up and error correction, while IP handles the actual routing over the net. That's from what I remember, hope it's right.
Thanks so much for your help. You really took the time.
From Memory TCP is what the internet uses so thus they called it TCP/IP (Internet Protocol).
The workgroup doesn't matter and i would sugest staying clear of the Direcory acess program as they are mainly for use with specilist servers (E.g. Windows NT Doesn't Serve and OS X Server).
To connect to a Computer over your network Via Samba you need to use the Go Menu and select the connect to server (Or put the command (AKA Apple) Key and K) and type the folowing "SMB://Computernameoripaddress" with out the quotes and supstuting the text after SMB:// with the computers net bois name or it's ip address. If you click the + button before telling it to connect then it will be added to a favorites list. You will probably be asked for a user name and password to connect to the computer you want even if you do not have one set, put in the default users name anyhow and leave the password blank if you don't have one. The Shares setup on the computer your connecting to should show as a drop down menu.
Now for the printer.
Samsung printers are not techniacally supported by Mac's however there is prob a driver that will drive it anyhow. Have a look @ Gimp-Print (See:
http://gutenprint.sourceforge.net/p_..._Printers.php3 ) neer the bottom some samsung printers are listed. The Printer Model (A HP Laserjet something) is the driver you need to use to drive the printer you have (If it's listed). But before you go galabanting into Gimp-Print just stop and check to see if the HP Drivers thatb you need arn't included in OS X as I think HP Printers Are.
Sounds like you need to sit down with a Mac Os X networking Book and read the WHOLE thing before trying things.
Good Luck
