How do I increase my permissions to the level I can install software updates without the error message that I do not have enough permissions

Hi Gary,
you need to have your account amended so that you are part of the admin group.
Are you using a local account or a network account?
If you are using a local account then you do this via the Accounts System Preference under the Security tab (10.3) or Password tab (10.4). The trouble is that you'll need to use a user who is already in the admin group in order to change your own status.

can you please perform the following test for me and mail me the result.

Open Terminal in /Applications/Utilities
Type:
id

Copy the results and send them over for me to take a look

next can you go back into Terminal and type the following:

ls -al /Applications

Send all the output over for me to take a look at.

Also, can you let me know what software you are trying to install and it uses the installer application or if you are suppose just to drag it to you disk.

The software that I am trying to install is a upgrade to OmniGraffel professional , I use this software all the time for charts and I just wanted to install the dragg and drop updata as I have done many times before on other updates.

Please try the last command again. I note that you didn't include a space between the "ls -al" and "/Applications" - sorry if this wasn't clear in the last mail.
The entire command:
ls -al /Applications

nearly - you tried all the combination except the one with a space between the ls and the -al and the /Applications...
ls[space]-al[space]/Applications

Try copying the command and pasting into terminal:
ls -al /Applications

Great - that's what I expected to see.
All the owners for the applications are incorrect. All the permissions look suspect to me - below is a snippit from my own Applications directory.

You can see everything is owner by root and the group is set to admin.

I'd strongly suggest fixing the permissions on your machine using the installation CD and the Disk Utility. Let me know if you need help with this procedure but basically it's:
Boot the machine from the install CD
Start Disk Utility from the menu in the installer
Select the boot volume
Select the First Aid tab and click "Fix Permissions"
