I have in the past couple of days installed Microsoft Office for Mac 2008 Home and Student. I thought it was just my mind playing tricks, or perhaps a somewhat irregular (though not impossible) slow-down in my DSL service, but that turns out not to be the case.
Pages load about three or four times slower than before I installed Office 2008. I downloaded Office 2008's SP1, and I also downloaded Update 12.1.1., but these have not solved the problem. On a hunch (I'm totally new to Mac so know nothing about these features), I went into Console and found an interesting entry:

: The function `CGPDFDocumentGetMediaBox' is obsolete and will be removed in an upcoming update. Unfortunately, this application, or a library it uses, is using this obsolete function, and is thereby contributing to an overall degradation of system performance. Please use `CGPDFPageGetBoxRect' instead.
I wonder if this "function" which is "obsolete" is what is causing the slow-down or "degradation of system performance"? Where should I look for this "upcoming update"?
Is Office 2008 really slowing down my internet connection? How could this be?
Would it help if I switched from "obtain updates automatically" to "obtain updates manually" in Office Updater?
Tyler That May help but i dont think its office. it might be something else.

Thanks Raymond. Why do you think the problem is not office? Do you have any suspicions on where else this problem might be coming from? This a brand new MacBook Pro. I am using Firefox, but have confirmed that Safari loads pages just as slow. Why would the problem have just started only after I installed office? I think it actually (if my memory is not deceiving me) only started after I downloaded Office 2008 SP1.

Raymond, I have an update. Now I'm totally baffled as to what the original problem was, since the computer seemed to be fast on the Internet when I first got it, then it slowed down. Whatever it was, I seem to have found a solution. You may already be familiar with this, but I found the solution on an apple.com/support discussion page. The solution was opendns.com. I went to that site and followed the instructions for the free and download-free dns address. My web browser is once again loading pages fast. OpenDNS provides free software to support what seems like a dynamic relationship with your computer's IP addresses. Would you recommend downloading the OpenDNS software? Thanks, td.
Yes if it is helping it then yes. i have heard of it but never used it.
