Whenever I click on a file and select Open with > Other... the finder crashes.

The contextual menu, have you recently installed or remove a program that used the contextual menu? Is this under OS9 or OSX? I am assuming OS9. You can reboot the machine and rebuilt the desktop.

Try that and let us know if it worked.

Sorry, I should've been more elaborate. OSX 10.3.8. I just installed Toast, and I think that's where the problem might lie. Whenever I try to select 'Mount Disc Image' under Toast it crashes instantly too. It gave a plist parsing error in the console, but I moved the file it was complaining about and that error is gone, but it still doesn't work.
Thanks.

Okay, well, have you repaired permissions lately. If you have toast backed up, maybe you can delete it, and reinstall. Other than that, I am not sure I know any more ideas. I will put your question as open, and perhaps some one else can help you.

Alex,
My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you.
First, make sure you have the latest version of Toast. I am assuming you are using Toast Titanium 6. There is an update at:
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/6351
Once you have that installed, go to the Utility folder (in Applications) and select Disk Utility. When that opens click on the second icon at the far left, then click on Repair Permissions.
When that is done, give Toast a try.
Are you still having trouble with Open >other ?

Neither of these things helped. Now I found another problem - thunderbird is crashing whenever I try to bring up an 'attach file' dialog. There seems to be something in common with all of these - all the dialogs are of the 'pick this thing and open it' type. This is really confusing me!
What I've tried so far:
-reinstalling toast
-removing toast
-updating toast
-repairing permissions
-moving the 'SystemFolderLocalizations.strings' file that was causing a plist parsing error whenever toast crashed
None of these things have changed this behavior by an iota, however.

Alex,
The next step is to use the OS X CD (disk 1) to start up the computer.
When the installer screen comes up, do not click on it. Instead go to the Installer Menu and select Disk Utility.
When that opens, click on the second icon at the far left. Now click on the Repair Disk button at the bottom far right.
Watch the activity screen. If it shows that it made repairs, click on Repair Disk again when it is done. The object is to make it find all the problems and repair them. You may need to hit that button three or four times. You want the end result to say Appears Okay without any reference to making repairs.
When done, quit Disk Utility and restart the computer.
Now give it a test run. If the problem still occurs, create a new user with the same permissions. Log in as that user and see if the problem still occurs.
If the new user does not have problems, you have a corrupt file in the preference folder. Let me know and I will give you a list of what files you should delete.

Alright,
I restarted with the OSX disk, did the disk repair.
There were a couple small errors which it fixed no problem.
It then said "Volume bitmap needs minor repair" but did not say that it fixed it. The summary said that one volume was properly repaired, but repairs failed on the other.
Note: I only have one partition on my one hard drive...
The problem persists.

Alex,
You will need to invest in a third party disk utility such as Disk Warriror, TechTool Pro or Drive 10.
Either one has a bootable CD that can start up the computer. It then can make the repairs that Disk utility can not.
DiskWarrior can be found at:
http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/index.html
Drive 10
http://www.micromat.com/drive_10/dri...roduction.html
TechTool Pro
http://www.micromat.com/tt_pro_4/tt_pro_4.html
If you want to know which one the MacOSX gurus use, most of us use Disk Warrior.
