OS Version: MacOS 8.1

Description:
Hello!

I had a problem with opening a .txt file and also .zip files. I have unstuffit 4.5 with the EE and drop the .zip and .txt files there. It cranks for a few seconds, then stops with no expanded file anywhere.

For the .txt file, I tried simpletext (file too big) and ClarisWorks (failed). Joar from you folks said to get texedit from the net, which I did. It worked fine for a few minutes, then crashed repeatedly in use with plenty of memory (I doubled the suggested size)

I also tried my canopener cd. It creates a window giving the text size but when I double click that, it says there's not enough memory, then Canopener quits unexpectedly due to a type 1 problem.

Could this be a hardware problem?

Dan

Hi Dan ! Here comes the answer to the question you posted to "No Wonder !"

The inital problem is that you run Ramdoubler 2 on a OS8 Mac. Ramdoubler 2.x isn't supported for MacOS8 there is a new verison suppporting OS8 called RamDoubler8 to reflect it's supporting OS8. That would probably solve the problems you have with TexEdit. RamDoubler 8 can be downloaded free of charge from connectix website.

http://www.connectix.com/ - RamDoubler developer and publisher.

It's also recommended that you upgrade your ram to 32Mb or more. Your computer shipped with MacOS7.5 which had a much smaller Ram footprint. After installing more Ram you won't have the need for Ram-enhancers like RamDoubler. Uninstalling it will make your computer faster and probably more stable.

If you still have problems with TexEdit there is a good alternative in "BBedit Lite" also free of charge at http://www.barebones.com/

For the zip files I recommend that you check out Zipit a little harder to master but probably much more competent than Stuffit when decompressing zip files. It can be downloaded from nearest info-mac archive. There is a copy of ZipIt at ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/mac/info-mac/cmp/zip-it-138.hqx

I hope this solves all your file problems. Anything else just email me...
