Knowledge Level: Intermediate
Problem: Combination
Computer Type: Apple
Model: PowerMac 6320/120
RAM: 48meg
RAM Enhancer: Virtual Memory
OS Version: System 7.6.1

Description:
Using Norton Utilities to optimize hard disk, I have an alternative startup disk (on a zip disk-this is not the problem).
Whenever I try to run speed disk, I am told that this cannot be done as there are files open. I have done a fast find to locate these files and they are: Desktop DF 1950K and Desktop DB 312K. Both of these are INVISABLE files and I do not know how to delete them from my system. I have rebuilt my desktop and they are still there. When I do a find on them, of course, they do not show up.
The third file open is something called:
Catalog Directory 2028K and this does cannot be located either using normal find, or Fast Find.
Have you any ideas on how I can proceed from here? I have a 1.2 gig HD and have over 800 MB free, but am still trying to optimize it.

Appreciate your past assistance.

With Thanks,

Jeff Zarit

Jeffrey,
Hi, my name is Ed. I'm a No Wonder volunteer and will try to answer your question. My email address is
There are several ways to make an invisible file visible. For example, you can use ResEdit (a free Apple utility) or File Buddy (a shareware utility). You can download both of them from ZDNet Mac Download at

File Buddy is easiest to use:
- Start File Buddy
- Under File menu, select Get Info... to display files
- Double-click on the invisible file ... a window opens
- In the window, find the box labeled Invisible (which will be checked)
- Uncheck it
- The file becomes visible
Good luck,
ed
