I was told by a guy at comp usa that if I hold the s key down during startup and enter fsck -y -f that the machine would optimize it's hard drive. Problem is it doesn't do anything other than start up like it regurlarly does. What am I doing wrong. Using a G5 imac with tiger.

Howdy!

Usually that fsck -y command is when your computer won't start up normally.

To optimize your hard drive, I recommend these apps:

Cocktail--www.macosxcocktail.com
CacheOut-- go to www.versiontracker.com and search for CacheOut

These programs help you clean out the caches and do regular maintenance to keep your computer humming.

In the case of real trouble, remember how to zap your PRAM (preference memory): command + option + p + r. This will reset your clock and other behind-the-scenes operations that can get buggier over time.

Hope this helps!
