I have a G5/2.5 gigHz at work that runs OS 10.3 and it came with the install DVDs (of course.) I am interested in installing OS 10.3 on my home G4/500, but was not sure if it will run on that computer. So, before buying OS 10.3 I tried using my back-up system DVDs (copies of the originals) to test it out. I got a message that the install cannot take place on my computer. On one hand, I'm glad that I did not shell out the money yet for OS 10.3, but on the other hand I'm a little disappointed and surprised it didn't "take." Do the G5 disks simply not work on a G4? I know I have to have a separate license for each machine, but I didn't think I was violating the "spirit" of the agreement by testing. So my question is this: Is it safe for me to upgrade this computer with a freshly bought 10.3, should I wait for 10.4 or am I stuck with 10.2.8. Thanks in advance.
Mike
Hello Mike,
Thank you for choosing Macosx.com, my name is Jim and perhaps I can help.
I believe what you seeing is that the installer will not run on your G4. typically the restore / install CDs included with a Mac will only run one the same model. For example I can not use my G4 Mac-Mini DVD on my G4 QuickSilver, also true the other way around.
According to Apple, Panther should run on:
Mac OS X 10.3 requires a Macintosh with a PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor, built-in USB, at least 128MB of physical RAM and a built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer. Mac OS X does not support processor upgrade cards.
