hello there...i saw some questions similar to this but not quite. i was running the latest version of panther on my dual 500 G4 when certain applications started to crash before they even started....mainly safari and explorer. i decided it was time to do an erase and clean install of the software. however when i tried to install panther again with disc 1 it got about 97% through it and then gave a message "there were errors installing the software.." and that was it. i ended up having to go back and install os 9 that came with the computer originally. someone suggested it could be some bad memory because i had recently bought a gig to max out my computer. i took that memory out leaving me with 512mb and tried again but still no love. i had to reinstall 9.0 again and that seems to be working fine. however i thought i could at least update to the latest version of nine but it wouldn't even let me do that. i don't know what else to do. i have run os 9.0 tech tools and all the hardware passes. thanx for your help.

Try this:
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu if using Tiger.) Be sure to use the installer disk for the version of OS X you intend to install.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the leftside list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the leftside list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour depending upon the drive size.
Now, try installing OS X. If you continue to have disk error problems, then your hard drive may have physical problems or you may have a motherboard problem.
