I am trying to print something to a phaser 7300 and the fonts are not printing correctly. In order to download the fonts I have to use apple printer utility. Everytime I try to use that the message "Classic cannot find a Mac OS 9 startup folder on the startup disk to use" pops up. I have never had OS 9 on this computer and I don't know why it keeps saying that! I have had this problem in other instances but this time I need it fixed.
Can anyone help me out?!?
Thanks!

OS 9 is required for Classic to run. Apple Printer Utility is a Classic/OS 9 app. It won't run without OS 9 installed to provide the Classic OS 9 emulation within OS X.
I haven't found an OS X susbstitute font downloader.

Thank you for your response. That is what I was afraid of. Xerox tried to tell me it is my Mac but I thought it was the program. It is not good to buy an expensive printer and not be able to use it properly!

I have no way to test this, but you can try -
Open Printer Setup Utility and drag and drop fonts to the printer. I think it's possible the font is sent to the printer that way. Then test it by printing something with that font.
Keeping my fingers crossed for you...

Thanks so much for trying to help...but that didn't work either unfortunately. I did discover a different program on xerox's website: font management utility. But every time I try to load a font it says the font is invalid. So, it looks like that is a whole different problem!

Most postscript printers only accept Type 1 fonts (although many have TrueType fonts built-in). Is that the problem - are the ones you're trying Trutype fonts?

No, I actually tried both types. Neither worked. In fact, the main font I need is a postscript font. And it is common...times bold.

Robin,
Sorry I haven't been able to help more. If you don't mind, I'll send this back to the rest of the Techs, to see if there are other ideas.
Best Wishes.

Hi Robin,
I'll try to help you solve your problem, but first I need to establish a few facts:
1. What version of OS X are you running?
2. What application are you using for font management?
3. What application are you trying to print from.
4. Have you tried installing the drivers, postscript patch, etc. from the Xerox site?
http://www.support.xerox.com/go/resu...=Phaser%207300
5. Try sending the "RGB, CMYK, HSB, and Font Sample Prints" at the bottom of that page to your printer and see what happens. I'm just trying to work out exactly which at stage the font error is occurring.
A quick note – I'm going to be away all weekend. If you are desperate to get this problem solved this weekend, then I suggest you post another question, and refer to this one to give whichever Tech picks it up a bit of background to your problem.
If it can wait until Monday, then I will be happy to pick up this ticket again and continue helping you with your problem. Post answers to my questions and follow the suggestions above. Let me know what the results are and we'll have another bash at fixing the problem then.

Thanks for your help. I am running OSX 10.3.9. I have Font Book for font management. (I have tried using the font applications Xerox uses to upload fonts to the printer but that is the source of this question because they do not work.) I am printing from Indesign. I have tried installing all of the drivers and other things from the Xerox site. A lot of them are in the .sea format, which I can not get to open. (The print samples you mentioned are one of those files.)
Thanks again!
Robin

Right after I sent the message I tried to print from other applications and found that it print correctly. So, I played around in Indesign and discovered that if I change the settings from High res. to med. res. and standard vs. enhanced quality that it prints correctly. Of course that still does not really solve the issue of why I cannot open the print applications Xerox says I should be able to open, but at least I can print that font.

Hi Robin,
OK, to get around the problems you have, it looks like you will need to install OS 9.
.SEA files are self-extracting archives, but they need Classic/OS 9 to run. You can open them with an OS X version of Stuffit Expander, which you can get, with the rest of the Stuffit suite here:
http://www.allume.com/mac/index.html
I'm afraid Font Book is not an application with which I am familiar. I have over 4000 fonts on my system, for which Font Book is totally inadequate! I use Extensis Suitcase X1 instead, so I'm afraid I'm not going to be of much use to you on that front.
Which font, exactly, is it that is causing the problem?
Could it be that the applications you have downloaded won't run because they are OS 9 apps that need Classic installed. There should be OS X versions of everything too, or Xerox are being very VERY slack!
Let me know!
CQ

I thought the problem was that the applications are for OS 9 as well. Xerox assures me it is my computer. But I think they just do not know what they are talking about. I was hoping there was a way around opening an OS 9 application. I am definitely not buying OS 9 just for that. The font I was having problems with was Times. The font program they send is Font Management Utility. That is what I could not get to work. In fact, pretty much everything they sent will not work in OSX. I did try Stuffitexpander and the files were just text douments it seems. Maybe they were OS 9 also. I think I will give up for now since I can get it to print correctly at least. Thanks so much for your help!
