I have encountered this lousiness many times in the past, but this time, during sending a print job to my ethernet print server, then printer, the flashing "?" appeared. Disk First Aid, Norton's or any other type of disk repair will not fix the prob. The startup disk appears on my desktop, but it is locked and requires an old system CD to startup. Any suggestions short of re-installing 8.1, then 8.5, then updating to 8.6 and pulling out my hair?

I also got an ERROR-199 relating to not being able to open the system suitcase. Bascially it's re-stating that everything on my startup disk is locked.

Any ideas?

Don, welcome to macosx.com

The flashing question mark simply indicates that the computer is unable to find a startup disk (either locally or on a network volume) that contains valid system software. The flashing question mark does not in itself indicate any issue with your computer hardware, though the removal or failure of a disk or other component could cause it.

A.
First, try reselecting your System Folder while started up from CD:
1. Start the computer from the Mac OS 9 Installation or Restore CD that came with the computer.
2. Choose Control Panels from the Apple menu, and Startup Disk from the submenu.
3. Choose your hard disk as the startup disk.
4. Restart the computer.

B.
I would try to reset PRAM
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
6. Release the keys

C.
try reblessing the System Folder:
Reblessing the System Folder only works in situations in which all of the original files are still present and in which they are in the correct location (or in which you can put them back into the correct location). If any files have been deleted, you may need to reinstall system software. If you have deliberately removed System Folder files, this includes putting them back where you found them. Additionally, you should ensure that you only have one folder named "System Folder" on your disk
You may attempt to rebless your System Folder using these steps:
1. Startup from CD.
2. Close any open windows.
3. Open the hard disk.
4. Choose by Name from the View menu.
5. Locate the System Folder.
6. Open the System Folder.
7. Drag the System suitcase and the Finder to your hard disk icon. Doing this, these files are moved outisde the System folder.
8. Close the System Folder.
9. Drag the System suitcase and Finder back onto the System Folder icon.

If the Mac OS log reappears over the System Folder, it has been reblessed. You should select the folder in the Startup Disk control panel and try restarting the computer.

D.
try troubleshooting SCSI (if applicable):
If you have SCSI devices, you should try troubleshooting your SCSI chain. Improper configuration, termination, or cabling may cause the flashing question mark. Follow these steps:
1. Turn off the computer.
2. Turn off all connected devices.
3. Completely disconnect the SCSI chain from your computer. If you have installed a third-party SCSI card, try removing it from the computer.
4. Start up the computer.

If your computer starts up properly, you know the fault is with your SCSI chain.

Regards
Philippe

Philippe...

Thanks for the response, but all you had listed I had already found and completed from the apple website, to no avail. Any other ideas how I can unlock my hard drive? The hard drive icon is visible upon starting up from an old system CD. All files are still intact. I keep getting messages relating to the disk being locked or error -199.

Don
error -199: mapReadErr Map inconsistent with operation
I would say that something going wrong with your catalog but I find any other information on the Web
DiskWarrior (www.alsoft.com) may help in reconstructing the catalog. But I would say than zeroing the drive and re-installing the OS will be a solution
