I am not certain if you also support older versions of Mac OS, I hope you do. I must preface this by saying I am not a Mac user or administrator and I have been dumped into administrating a group of Macs with no prior experience I will do my best to detail the problem.
Having booted the system I was tasked with networking the Mac OS 8.6 systems running on Power PC's (uncertain which version if any) with the MS Windows 2000 Work group located in the same space.
I checked to ensure TCP/IP properties were set correctly, they were. I then ran the network browser.
System hangs.
I rebooted the Mac and attempted to connect to the windows system by mapping a share through chooser. I first ensured that appletalk was active on all the windows systems.
Entering the correct ip address and re checking it resulted in "server did not respond"
I investigated the apple talk settings on the power pc first. There was no "zone" listed, the node was 100 and the network was 210426. I then inspected the apple talk settings on the windows pc, no zone and no other options available.
The only system the Mac's seem to be able to talk to at the moment are the Sun OS systems through chooser.
After each iteration I attempted to run network browser with the same result. System hangs with no error message but the mouse still moves, forcing the application completly locks the system up no error message and requires reboot.
If there is any information that you need which has not been presented please ask for anything and everything you might need I will endevor to retrieve the information asap. Thank you for your time and consideration.
If I recall correctly, you need third party software to network OS 8.6 with Windows. I haven't used it but there is something called DAVE you might want to look into.
If the computers are capable of running OS X you could install that and with X I believe you should be able to network with Windows, although I have not personally done this.
Another possibility you might want to look into is VNC, which is free of charge. I have used that between Macs but I don't know if it would help your exact situation.
Under the Apple in the upper left there is a thing that says About This Computer. If you look there you could post the specs of your Macs here and we may be able to tell you if you can install X on the Macs.
