hi you guys!
I am so confused, I will be lucky if I can verbalize the question!
How do I know if something is *installed* or not?
Extras came with my computer and with OS8.
Open transport, for instance. I find it in a "find" search. But how do I know if it is installed? I see TCP/IP in my control panels, but no open transport. do they do the same thing?
I am having a lot of crashes and freezes and am getting frustrated. Have been searching all the tech pages out there, but am only more confused!
I know this is a confusing letter. I know you can only do the best you can with me!
thanks so much
cindy

Hi Cindy,
You can easily confirm what items are active in your system folder by using an extension manager. My advice would be for you to go to
www.casadyg.com and download the Conflict Catcher 4 ("CC4") demo. CC4 is an awesome utility, one of the few "must have" ones (along with Norton Utilities, and a good backup program such as Retrospect or Retrospect Express), in my opinion. OS 8.0 itself comes with an Extension Manager which provides some of CC4's abilities. You can access the Extension Manager, by going to your Apple Menu, then your Control Panels folder and then looking for the Extension Manager.
TCP/IP and Open Transport are both needed, and work together. The Open Transport items are in your Extension Folder (located inside your System Folder), instead of the Control Panels folder as is TCP/IP.
Please let me know by e-mail how much installed RAM you have; this may be the source of your crashes. You mention 4 megs, but confirm this because it seems too low. To find out how much installed RAM you have, go to your Apple Menu, and select "About this Computer" or "About this Macintosh", depending on what you see there.
Also, you should see an item called "Apple System Profiler" under your Apple Menu. Select it and then when it is open type command-N to generate a report. If you want, send me that report as an e-mail attachment. This should help with the troubleshooting process.
