TICKET ARCHIVE -> OS 9 on to iMac G5 + Apple ID

I still have the ongoing problem of not being able to get OS 9 to 'take' when trying to download from the supplied No 2 disc. Also, when trying to get support from Apple I cannot get them to accept my ID. When I try to change to new ID I get a 'red' message which says, in effect they cannot accept what I type in! Apple are unaccessible to me . . . . Thanks for any help offered. Dennis (dens)

Steven,
Thanks. One of your suggestions seems to have done the trick. All I need now is to persuade my ex LCll material on floppies to open in Classic. Keeps wanting to do so in Acrobat which doesn't work! Dennis

I think you can fix that with Get Info and change the default application. Or rebuild the Desktop - that always seems to fix things. There's an option to rebuild the Desktop in the Classic preference pane.

Steven,
Thanks again. Rebuilding desktop does not help. Apart from Acrobat (which does not open) the only items I can open in are Text Edit or Script Editor (gobbledegook to me). Classic items are greyed out in the options lists. Stymied I'm afraid. Have a happy & healthy New year anyway! Dennis.

In that case try first launching the application, then open the file from the app's File-Open menu. Then use Save As to resave it. That should fix things.

That doesn't work because when I try to open the app it tries to do so in Acrobat & the menu items are greyed out . . . Sorry, this seems to be an unsolvable problem. I cannot get any info from Apple either.

Now I'm confused. Are you saying that when you try to run the application by double-clicking on its icon that instead Acrobat is launching? Is this happening in OS 9 or in OS X?

Apologies for confusion. I have some work which was produced via System 7 & a program called Aldus Personal Press. It is these which I am trying to open & which keep trying to open in Acrobat. I'm afraid I get muddled over whether something is an application, program, or whatever. Does this help clarify?

Yes, indeed, you've clarified it quite well. I remember Aldus Personal Press, it was the "lite" version of Aldus Pagemaker.

I doubt very much that Aldus Personal Press will even run in OS 9, so I don't know how you might gain access to these documents. However, if you have APP installed in OS 9 and it does launch, then use the File Open dialog to select and open each of the files, then re-save them using Save As. This will get the file association back.

If you have Pagemaker it may be able to open the files. Otherwise I don't know what you will be able to do with them. I have no idea if the current incarnation of Pagemaker - which is called Adove InDesign CS2, will be able to read those old file formats.

Thanks. I guess I shall just have to write off all my old material. Dennis

At last I have figured a method which may be of interest to others in the same situation. I could not get Personal Press derived material onto my new iMac. By chance I realised that I could save the PP material as RTF which is readable on the new Mac. The transfer from old hard disc to floppy, & then via external floppy reader onto new Mac is tedious, but has enabled me to save a lot of stuff I thought I would have to give up. Best wishes to all. Dennis
