Hi

I'm trying to upgrade my G3 Imac to OS 9 from 8.6, but my Mac won't let me because i haven't updated my Firmware. The problem is that this is my first Mac, and i have no idea what Firmware is, never mind how to upgrade it. All my mac will do is point me in the direction of the CD extras on my OS 9 disk and not actually tell me which folder has the Firmware updates in it. Please, please help a poor Mac Virgin.

Michael,

My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you. Before you do any installing, go to:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60384

Download the file and follow these instructions:

1. Double-click the iMac Firmware Updater icon to start the update.
2. Read the onscreen instructions and follow them carefully.
3. On a /A configuration, a message will appear explaining that your iMac's firmware needs to be updated.
4. On all other configurations, a message will appear saying you need to shut down your computer and insert the end of a straightened paper clip into the Programmer's button hole, follow steps 5 through 9 to complete the update process.
5. Click Shut Down in the dialog box to shut down your computer.
6. Open the port cover door on the right side of your iMac and insert the end of a straightened paper clip into the Programmer's button hole, the lower of the two button holes.
7. Continue to hold the paper clip in the hole and press and release the Power button on your iMac or on the Apple USB keyboard to start up your iMac.
8. When you hear a long tone, remove the paper clip. A progress bar will appear at the bottom of the screen as the update takes place.
9. After your iMac starts up, if the update process was successful, a message appears saying the firmware is up-to-date. Click OK.

Is you iMac a DV or iMac DV special edition? If that is the case, there is another firmware you need to install:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58557

Now, you can use the OS 9 CD to start up the computer and do a clean install of the OS 9. The clean install option should be on the second install screen.

Once done, you should be fine. You do need to install OS 9 compatible printer drivers, stuffit expander, etc. To check for updates on the programs you have, go to:

Depending on exactly what model iMac you have will depend on if there are any further firmware updates. Do you have a slot loading CD drive or a tray loading one?

Michael,

Yes, there is one more firmware update you need to install before going to OS 9.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60458

To install the iMac CD Update, please follow these steps:

1. Save all open documents and quit all applications.
2. If a disc is in the CD-ROM drive, drag its icon to the trash and eject the disc.
3. Double-click the application iMac CD Update.
4. Click continue in the dialog box.
5. If the application is unable to update the firmware on your CD-ROM drive, you may have a system that is not affected by these problems, or the firmware may already be updated. If you experience problems and are not able to update the firmware using this program, contact your local authorized Apple service provider.
6. If the firmware is already updated, you may be offered an opportunity to revert to the original firmware. If you wish to do this, click the Revert button. Otherwise, click Quit.
Important: Do not reset, shut down, or turn off power to your computer while the iMac CD Update is running. Doing so may cause damage to your CD-ROM drive.

Once this is installed, you then can install OS 9. Let me know how you do and if you need further help.
