Hoping someone could give some advice...
I have an older clamshell iBook that's working with OSX 10.1.5. After doing some searches for a software update, I understand that in order to update the software, I would have to purchase a full version of the latest one (ie. 10.4, which is unfortunate). With that said, just wondering if it would be in my best interest to just purchase a full version of OSX and upgrade the iBook, or just purchase a new system altogether? I've upgraded the hdd, but still have all of the other original hardware....not sure what my ram specs are, but would it even be possible to run an upgraded version of the OS?
As well.....I'm more familiar with s/w and h/w for PC's, but was just wondering if there's system utilities built into a mac? Things comparable to device manager, safe mode, BIOS, etc?? I just want to understand the workings of my mac...
Thanks in advance for answering my questions if you can...

Here's my two cents for what it's worth. I'm pretty sure your iBook is a G3 and unless you have upgraded the memory, it probably doesn't have the minimum requirements needed to upgrade your operating system. Here's how to access the System Profiler which will give you all the information about your iBook.
Click the Apple logo top left of your Desktop. Then click, "About This Mac". Then click, "More Info"... the Macs System Profiler window will open for you.
The software/hardware/ etc., is all listed there. Double click the Macintosh HD icon on your Desktop, then double click Applications, then double click Utilties. Your best friend in a Mac is, "Disk Utility" and it can fix a myriad of disk errors and problems besides repairing permissions. Also, you can monitor RAM by using the activity Monitor, you can access your operating system using Terminal. A Mac can be booted into Safe Mode if necessary. You can use the Mac system CD that comes with it to reset an administrator password, use Disk Utility on the disk to repair the hard drive. You can do so much with a Mac and have more fun doing it. I have a laptop running Win XP and I like it, but it's just not a Mac. You might be able to upgrade to Jaguar but to be quite honest, Jaguar is two operatings system upgrades behind. If it were me instead of investing software upgrades in the iBook, purchase a new Mac. You can get a new iBookG4 running the most recent OS, Tiger 10.4.5 with all the bells and whistles for about $1,000, more for a RAM upgrade. To find more information you can try the www.apple.com Discussion boards also.

Get more opinions, find what works best for you!

Regards,
Carolyn :-)
PS... I have an original iMac G3. I upgraded her to Classic (9) and added 512 mb of RAM. But she's tired... I upgraded to a PBookG4 several years ago, then an iBookG4 and am very glad I did this.
