You will need a separate scanner driver. OS X has no built-in scanner drivers. The driver will have to come from HP.
Thanks! I just got an insanely long reply from HP, with somewhere around 40 steps to make it work; apparently they know the problem well.
For anyone else dealing with this, here are their instructions:
You will need to uninstall the HP software you have currently installed,
the most effective way to remove all the HP software so there is nothing
left behind to corrupt the installation of the new software is a process
called a manual uninstall. Once you have removed the HP software you
will need to download the latest version from
WWW.HP.COM.
Follow the steps below to download the software,
1. Open your internet browser, and go to <<
www.hp.com >>
2. In the lower, right-hand part of the screen, click on the link
"Software and Driver Downloads"
3. On the page that appears, type your unit name into the "for product"
field (EXAMPLE: psc 1210, scanjet 5550 or officejet 4215), then press
enter.
4. On the page that appears select the appropriate device from the
results. If the page does not say "Search Results", then skip this step
and go to the next step.
5. On the page that appears, choose your Macintosh Operating System from
the list. NOTE MAC OS refers to any version prior to OS X. MAC OSX
refers to any 10.x.x version.
6. On the page that appears, select the appropriate download from the
Drivers category. Please ensure that you select the driver for your
version of Mac OS.
7. On the page that appears, scroll to the bottom and click on "Download
Now". The download should begin. By default, the file should download
to your desktop. (The actual time it takes for the download will vary
with file size, connection type and connection speed.)
Once you have the file downloaded to your desktop close all open windows
and follow the steps below to manually uninstall the software.

WHEW!
Sorry, I'm a bit novice in that territory. I have an Airport Express and it's currently set up to Extend an Existing Network that is created by an Airport Extreme Base Station. In most cases I can plug in any Ethernet or USB device to the Airport Express and the device will show up on my LAN. However, I haven't tried with a USB printer because all of my printers ar network printers.
Thanks for your help! I am so curious as to why pprinting works fine but the scanning functions are useless over a network. Happy holidays!
I don't know. Perhaps you can't share a scanner via the operating system. I have no experience with the multi-purpose devices like yours. I've always used a separate printer and scanner. You had success with HP support once, maybe you should try again.
