New guy here - Graphic Designer on Mac since 1986, but new to OS X Panther, and not much of a techie.
——————————————————————————————
Switched systems on my PowerMac G4 from OS 9.2.2 to OS X 10.3.9 and Toast 5.2.1 (and 5.2.3) "unexpectedly quits" when the CD drive spins-up. These versions are supposed to be good with both systems. Roxio can't seem to help.

I have tried everything I can think of — re-installed and upgraded software, checked firmware updates, started with extensions off, disconnected peripherals, trashed preferences, ran Disk Utility & Disk Warrior. Probably a minor system conflict, but I've killed 2 days on this.

I have OS 9 on another internal drive and Toast works fine with it, but I don't want to re-start up into OS 9 everytime I need to burn a CD.

Any reason to believe that upgrading to Toast 7 might solve the problem? I'd sure hate to spend the bucks and then find that it still doesn't work.

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Bob, welcome to macosx.com

No, I'm not sure at all that Toast 7 will solve this issue.

To see if Toast5 or something within the osX system is the culprit, could you download BurnXfree
http://www.hernansoft.com/products.html
a freeware for burning CDs and try it ?

You spoke a bout "check firmware update", but as far as your PMG4 is concerned, may I guess that your machine was not eligible for a Firmware update to pass from 9.x to Panther :
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
or if yes, did you apply it ?

Philippe

Hello Philippe,

I was not familiar with BurnXfree. Following your suggestion, I downloaded it, and it works fine. I'm not sure what that tells me, however, except that there is nothing wrong with my hardware. You agree?

I went to the Mac OS X: Available firmware updates page you mentioned and there is no firmware listed as needed.

I just thought of this:
My computer is a 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 (MDD) 2003. It came with full versions of OS 9.2.2 and OSX 10.3.2 installed on an 80 Gb internal. I added a 200 Gb Maxtor internal drive, and that is the drive I am using with OSX 10.3.9 ... and THIS is the drive I should be checking for firmware updates, Yes? If so, do I just start "Googling" around, or is there a Maxtor site you know of?

Me again Philippe,

Here is the profile of that drive I added:
Maxtor 6L200P0:

Capacity: 189.92 GB
Model: Maxtor 6L200P0
Revision: BAH41G10
Serial Number: L401WDCG
Removable Media: No
Detachable Drive: No
BSD Name: disk1
Protocol: ATA
Unit Number: 1
Socket Type: Internal
OS9 Drivers: Yes

Mac OS X HD:

Capacity: 189.8 GB
Available: 170.76 GB
Writable: Yes
File System: Journaled HFS+
BSD Name: disk1s10
Mount Point: /

Where would I check to find if there is frimware update needed? And do you think that is even a possible solution?

Regards,
Bob

(1) find some Roxio discussion about a similar problem to yours:
http://boards.support.roxio.com/roxi...d=20038#M20038

(2) Roxio has a refund policy, so I guess if Toast7 does not work on your machine, you can hope to have money back

(3) what you can also is
download the 10.3.9 combo
http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...pdate1039.html
and re-apply it over your existing 10.3.9
Repair permissions after reboot and test again

(4) I would aslos to see if there is no firmware update for the burner; what's your model ? a SuperDrive ?

Philippe,

1) Funny you would find the Roxio discussion about a similar problem as mine. In fact, THAT'S ME! I tried to solve the problem discussing it with the Roxio group before finding you guys.

2) Yeah, maybe I should go ahead and buy the new Toast, but I'm the type that probably wouldn't ask for a refund if it doesn't work, thinking that the problem isn't with their software and therefore isn't their fault.

3) I downloaded and installed the 10.3.9 combo and repaired permissions, but nothing changed.

4) No, I think SuperDrive refers to DVD writer and mine reads/writes CDs, but only reads DVD. I can't seem to find a firmware update for the 200 MB Maxtor 6L200P0 Internal drive I have installed. Any idea where I might find it?

PS: I'm confused. Should I be looking for firmware update on the CD drive, or the drive which has the OS?

No, you have to find a firmware for the CD drive, not the hard disk !
Could you give me the type of drive (See Apple menu, about this mac, more infos)

Sure, it's the apple installed drive that came with the G4 CPU:

Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Model: HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4480B
Revision: 1.03
Serial Number:
Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-ROM
Disc Burning: Apple Supported/Shipped
Removable Media: Yes
Detachable Drive: No
Protocol: ATAPI
Unit Number: 0
Socket Type: Internal

I found nothing as far as firmware update is concerned by this drive.

I would like to make a last test: burning from the Finder.

(1) In SystemPreferences, CD&DVD section, check that the action for "When inserting a blank CD" is set to "Ask me"
(2) Follow this document to burn data on the CD
http://www.bc.edu/offices/help/meta-...rningCDs.shtml

This burning process only implies Panther built-in facility...so if this failed -> there is a problem in the installed system..which I do not believe because BurnXfree (a front-end to the Panther built-in burning routines) succeeded.
If the burning is successfull, so Toast is the culprit.
Well I do not use Toast 5 on Panther; I was using Toast 5 on 9.X and when I jumped to Panther, I imediately updated to Toast 6 TI

Hello again Philippe,

I did the routine of burning a CD using the OS, and It was successful!

I was not aware of a CD burning capability within the OS. Was that new with OS X? I don't remember that in OS 9.

So, we agree then that Toast 5 must be the culprit? Guess I should go ahead and purchase Toast 7?

(1) Yes, this new, so simple burning process is born with Panther
(2) Well, understand me: I never had any (I say 'any') problem with Toast, whatever the version of was. With GraphicConverter, TechToool and DiskWarrior, there are the sole applications I update (free update or paid) immediately after the new release.
I would say "yes, go to Toast 7", but I must admit, I cannot, in your specific issue, ensure that Toast7 will solve the problem.

Well, a big dilemma: I never force people to buy a program, because I understand that one hundred of bucks can be important for some family..and that they're more important things in life than computer stuffs.

What I would do is calling Roxio and be sure of the refund policy.

OK, Philippe.

I understand, and I agree.

I want to thank you for your time and your help with this. If with the purchase of Toast 7, my problem is solved, I'll come back and post the result.

Thanks again,

Bob
