HELP!!
There's various levels to my problem here, but I suspect they're related in some way. Problem started right after install of Mac OS update>>>
Only a problem for 1 of 2 users created on the machine.
Procedure
1. downloaded and installed OSX10.3.9 Update
2 . Download and install Firefox
Problems
1.Launch MS Entourage X (from Office X install - it's been working for a year without a problem) - which seems to start up, but then hangs/friezes with the beach-ball timer rotating indefinitely if it's over the Entourage menu's (but is regular arrow when over other parts of the screen). There's no mail window, no keyboard shortcuts work, menu's dont work. Can switch to finder by clicking on desktop. Can't use Dock icon to bring Entourage to front. Can bring to front with command-tab. Office notifications are working. So I Force quit Entourage.
2.In Finder, I go to user>documents>Microsoft User Data>, and JUST select the folder "Office X Identities". Finder gets the beach ball, hangs indefinitely. I Force relaunch / restart / shut down etc etc
3. Same path as above, select folder "Office". Finder hangs etc etc. Force relaunch.
4. Try using 'Mail' app. Open mail app, go to pref's so i can put account details in - Mail app hangs indefinitely. Force quit.
Have compressed the database daemon, dumped prefs, run all the utilities, reinstalled Entourage from installer, created new Microsoft user data folders, reinstalled OS update, almost killed my girlfriend.
Computer has 2 users.
1. Entourage works perfectly on other users login.
2. I can navigate to those infrected directories and open them from other user, and no hang occurs.
It's got to be something within my user surely??
There's never been a problem before with Entourage before and 2 days of forum reads and eliminating just about everything has led me to the verge of maddness and good Australian beer. Anyone know what this could be?? What else I could eliminate??
Any help is really appreciated - thanks folks

Don't know if I can solve this but I'll see if I can help.
- login as the user
- open Terminal (Applications/Utilities/Terminal)
- at the command line, type the following (I am assuming you aren't a
fluent Terminal user, so type and press the keys exactly as shown, i.e,
don't type the < and > signs, but press the key enclosed. For instance, means press the tab key.
If you're fluent at the command shell, then ignore the verbose
instructions):
cd Docu/Microsoft
That command should put you into the users Microsoft User Data
directory. Then type the following command:
ls -l
You should see output like this:
tteccb2:~/Documents/Microsoft User Data tteccb2$ ls -l
total 384

Cut and paste that output into your response. I'll look at that, then go from there. Since you're in Australia, the time difference will not work to our advantage, but I'll keep checking while I'm awake!

Thanks for the quick reply - what a great site.
Not an experienced terminal user -no.

See I have some directories less than you, though I don't remember having those before.
BTW. Your keystrokes enclosed in < and > seem to be being read as tags in the reply's - IE and Safari- and not showing up. I saw them only in my reply, in the field above.
Thanks Charlie - look forward to your reply - when you're awake. You in the US?

Oh yeah Charlie.
Just realised MS Messenger isn't working either. Seems like a MS problem, thoug the rest of office is working correctly. (PP, XL, Word).
thanks

You did well for not knowing Terminal. I'm in DePere, Wisconsin in the US. As I write this it is 8:20pm my time. I'll be up for a couple more hours.
Now I want you to do the same cd command as before (I'll change my notation a little to not use the less than/greater than symbols. I forgot that they do some html translation to these responses)
- Start a new Terminal session (you could use the old one, but I'm having
you start a new one to keep a common starting point)
- type the following
cd Docu[tab]/Microsoft[tab][enter]
ls -l Office[tab][enter]
- should see something like this

Interesting. Looks to me like it's not processing the contents of the Office x identities. Makes me think I need to learn some more about my Mac.
Thanks mate. You guys are legendry volunteers. Across the world, and still helping out. Good man.

Tim,
Try a similar thing again. We'll add an option to the ls command and a correction to the du command:
cd Docu[tab]/Microsoft[tab][enter]
ls -lR Office[tab][enter]
du -sk *
For the du command, there should be a space between -sk and the asterisk.

Presume I'm typing 'el's' and not capital 'eye's' in command line: Is -IR Office[tab][enter]
Tim...
chasbutt - May 1, 2005 - 11:37 pm
Tim,
The du command was correct, but the ls command does not have any letter i's in it. This command line stuff is tricky that way. So try that again:
cd Docu[tab]/Microsoft[tab][enter]
ls -lR Office[tab][enter]
That is:
- lowercase L
- the letter s
- space
- dash
- lowercase L
- capital R
- space
- Office
- [enter]
It is pretty wild that I'm here in the US trying to help someone in Australia!

Yeah, pretty precise. Especially working through commands I know very little about, with a typeface which displays letters very similar.
Man, really appreciate your help. Must be late now - go to bed when you're ready. I'm at work 2.01pm. Must be late for you!!!

Well, here's what this shows. The permissions of the Office X Identities is correct and there is data in there, but not a lot (my Database file is 200 meg for my work account, whereas the Database file here is only 405 K). The ls -lR command is basically the same as when you click on the Office X Identities folder in the Finder. The Database file contains all the addresses, messages, tasks, attachments, etc. We can see here that all the files have been updated recently, probably when you are trying to start Entourage.
Do this next. Go back into Terminal and run these two commands and send me the output:
netstat -in
netstat -rn
That's a lowercase "eye" before the letter N in the first command and a lowercase R before the N in the second command.
neglected to tell you that i moved my ms user data and restarted entourage before i contacted your support - that replaces the ms user data directory - which explains the lack of info in it. there is a gb or so of info in the original item. however, having said that, the directories originally hanging my finder are the ones we've been testing today (or any office x identities directory within this user, when accessed from this user, including the one containing my actual data sitting on my desktop.). remember, i can access the directories from other user login without the hang.
hope that hasn't wasted your time. must take a bit to visualise a support job when you're not sitting in front of the machine.
keep well

chasbutt - May 2, 2005 - 12:52 am
Tim,
I kind of thought that those were new, empty files and you'd already tried that avenue.
I suggest you try removing the Entourage preferences. This file can be found in the user's home directory as follows:
Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.Entourage.plist
You could move it to the trash then try starting Entourage (if you get in, you will probably have to re-setup the mail accounts).
This will be my last post for the evening and I probably won't be able to get back to this for 21 hours, as I have a full day tomorrow. I'm not sure, but I think you can put your question back out to the queue for someone else to help you if removing the preference file doesn't help and you don't want to wait that long.

Really appreciate your input Charlie. Good to know that there's people out there who are happy to help people in need. You must be good guy.
I'll give the prefs deleting a shot, but pretty sure I tried that avenue first up. So much happenned since then ~ might work.
I'll let you know how I go with sorting it out. Hopefully I'll get it tonight - get rid of all my MS prefs - it's purge time.
Really busy myself - lot's of work in Sydney for Web designers.
Have a good one Mate

Hey Charlie.
After a bit of thought and realistic belief that it just wasn't going to happen, I've had an all-nighter, and reentalled the operating system, all the upgrades and all my software.
It's always a good feeling to have everything cleaned up, and all the old software purged.
Anyway, thanks very much Charlie for your help over yesterday. Hope you're tracking well. Read up on Wisconsin last night while I was waiting for all my files to copy across to the external. Sounds like a outdoors type place.
Maybe I catch you there one day.
Have a good one dude.
Tim...
chasbutt - May 2, 2005 - 11:10 pm
Tim,
That was ambitious -- more energy than I would have had to pull an all-nighter, but the reinstall was probably a good move.
Good working with you. If you come to Wisconsin, bring a couple sweaters!! (It does get warm (80's) in the summer, but right now, it's 40's and 50's --- Fahrenheit that is!)
