I have a OS X 10.3 system that hangs when copying files from or to a network share using the afp:// way. I've done a restore of the system folder and I still get the same issue. I'm also getting a error -1014 when I to the software update.

If you have two questions that are unrelated, it's best to post them as seperate questions.

Hello, how are you doing? I've researched your problems and I think I have an answer to some of them. Lets first try to fix your software update problem. Is this the error you are getting...
A networking error has occurred: zero byte resource (-1014). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again.
If it is I think I might have the answer to fix your problem.
Thanks,
Paul Fletcher

Yes that is the error I am getting. I was just about to format the machine and start fresh. All the data is already backed up. I would still like to know what you suggested just incase I run into the issue again.

Thanks,

Well I formated the drive and still got the same issue. But now I have another problem. After the formated it connected once to the internet. I did a restart and now the bulit in ethernet just says the cable is not plugged in. I know the port and cable are good because other machines work. I was going to test a DLink USB to ethernet adapter on it. I located the OS X driver for it. I'm thinking my built in network has gone bad.

Hello, this is getting a little outside of what I know. I'm going to open your topic so other volunteers can take a look at it. Someone will be able to help you fix your problem.
Thanks,
Paul

That's a good start, if you use the USB to ethernet, you will be able to rule out the cord if you get a connection. You said that you had tried other machines, so you knew the cable wasn't bad, did you use the exact same cable? If you reformated and reinstalled os x then the problem is in your network. You might want to check connections on both ends to insure the other end hasn't come out, or is lose. I wouldn't rule out a damaged ethernet port though, so use the USB to ethernet to bypass using the port and see what happens.
