Hello,

My name's Mat and I just got my first Mac, an iBook last week. I'm very good with PCs and some Linux but I have very little Mac experience (at least since the Apple IIGS, the first computer I ever used). Since I'm pretty good with computers I'm learning quickly. However, I'm having what seems to be a frequent networking problem: I can't connect to shares on my Windows machine. Here is the nature of the problem:

I'm running 10.4.2 and XP SP2. The XP machine is wired through ethernet to a Linksys WRT54G and the Mac is on the router's wireless. The XP machine has no trouble connecting to the Mac's shared files. When I try to connect to the PC using Finder I get the dreaded "the original item could not be found" error. When I would try Go/Connect to server I got "could not
connect to the server because the name or Password is not correct." I made sure my XP account had a password setup for my username (and that I had it right) and that both computers were on the same workgroup. I have the firewalls of both computers turned off, and even turned off the router firewall, even though I couldn't see that doing anything. To make sure it wasn't another router issue I tried connecting the two directly with crossover cable and even firewire networking (which again, worked great for the XP machine seeing the Mac).

I also got DAVE and tried with that. Anytime I try to connect, using Finder or Go, it tells me I have "entered an invalid username or password." I've scoured this site and the rest of the internet, and though many people seem to get the same errors, none of them have helped me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot, - Mat

Hi, my name is azrad.

My company is using 3 mac and 7 pc. All of them connected through a network. I had the same problem like u did last time. To my finding, if you get such error message, it most probably due to incorrect path of your share on your pc.

Try this,
1. go to Finder
2. select Go > Connect to Server
3. in the Server Address, type this
smb://usernameassword@/
example: smb://userassword@winxp/sharedocs

Normally, on WinXP you don't have to key-in the username + password as you can connect them using guest account.

If should you encounter this kind of error.

The alias "ServerName" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found.

This is due because the PC known as "ServerName" does not enable file sharing.

Hope this would help you to tackle your problem.

Hey,

Thanks for the speedy response. I had'nt tried that exact variation of typing it in (never included the username and pass in the address, just wait for the prompt). Unfortunately, the box asking for username/pass/workgroup still pops up and I still get the "entered an invalid username or password" error when I try it. I don't get the alias error anymore since installing DAVE, just this password error. Since I wrote my first post I've also tried mounting it from the console. Thanks again for your help.....any other ideas? - Mat

ok.

how about this, try to login via Network > Workgroup > Servername.

When it prompt to enter your username and password, just enter 'guest' and leave the password field blank.

i've already tested it just now, and it works fined.

Hey,

Still getting the password error. I tried it with and without entering a workgroup name, since DAVE has that option. You think I should get rid of DAVE and try just using native OS X? If so, I'm a little confused about how DAVE runs......would I have to uninstall it or can I just stop the process? Thanks for the speedy response - Mat

hi mat,

May be it is possible that DAVE is conflicting with native OS X as you had suggested. You can give it a try by unistalling the software first and restart the system. This is to ensure that DAVE is not running in the background.

I hope you still have the DAVE installer in hand if you need to reinstall it later.

Hope this will help you.

Hey,

Sorry about the delay, I've been busy with school. Tried getting rid of DAVE (which I only got in the first place to try and fix this problem) and I get the same errors I used to. I'll keep poking around, but I can't think of anything else to try really. Thanks again, - Mat
