I've put a new 60 GB hard drive in my original bondi blue iMac. Upon installing OS X from my CD I noticed that the installation said it was successful after installing the first CD. It never asked for the Second CD. (I had previously dealt with partitioning the hard drive so that the software was loading onto the first 8GB.)
Subsequently, I rebooted and chose the new OS X folder for start-up but the little question mark just sits there blinking.
So, I've got a 60 GB hard drive that the disk utility sees.
I've got a CD set for OS X. It appears to install without issue but never asks for the second or third CD. All the help I've gotten suggests selecting the appropriate start-up drive which I do, and it still doesn't start-up.
What's up?
Thanks in advance,
David

First, your first partition on the drive must be less than 8 GBs. You will need to set the size to about 7.85 GBs or less. The drive must be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled), you need at least 128 MBs of physical RAM.
If you haven't done so in the past you need to install a
firmware update for the computer. The firmware update must be installed while booted into OS 8.6 or higher (not OS X.) You should not attempt to install OS X until the firmware update has been installed. You should also replace the internal backup battery if it hasn't been replaced recently.
The second disk of the installation set will only be required if you opt to install the additional applications and any printer drivers.

THanks, I did set the partition to less than 7 GB or so as the software recognizes the drive nicely after install. I looked for the firmware update but only could find one for slot loading iMacs not the tray loading ones.
Finally, I neglected to mention, sorry, that I had already been operating on OS X with this machine on it's original hard drive using it as a print server.
All I really wanted was to put in a larger hard drive and re-install OS X.
I guess my problem boils down to not being able to get the machine to boot up on the new "successfully loaded" OS X.
Thanks for your time and effort.

David,
The firmware update is here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60384.
You will have to boot the computer directly into OS 8.6 to 9.x in order to install the update.
There's no inherent reason why the system shouldn't work with the new drive. I would try erasing and reinstalling. If that, too, fails then maybe you have the oddball drive that won't work in the Mac.
Oh, BTW, did you check the jumpers on the drive to be sure they were set for MASTER?

Steven,
Thanks for all the attention this is fabulous.
I'll double check the firmware update but I was running a week ago on OS X.
As to Master Drive Hmmmmm? Say what ? That sounds like it could be a problem since I get a successful load and an interminable blinking folder!
How would I set the jumpers for Master drive?

The jumpers are on the rear of the hard drive where the power and data cable connect (usually.) There should be a diagram on the drive showing how to configure the jumpers to set the drive as MASTER.

Thanks. I don't recall specifically seeing a diagram on the case but then again I wasn't looking. I presume "jumpers" means "dip switches"?
Now, I promise I'll leave you alone for a while and then go try some solutions. I do believe I have the firmware from my 2 year old OS X load, but I'll try it all.
Thanks again,
David

No, they are actually jumpers. No dip switches, I'm afraid. If you don't find the diagram on the drive (unusual) then you can get the tech sheet for the drive at the mfgr.'s website which should have the jumper diagram.

Got it, thanks again

David,
Have you had any success in getting the new hard drive working properly?
soccercomplexity - Jun 27, 2005 - 8:16 pm
Thank you for your interest. I have not been able to get to the manufacturer to learn about jumpers and I have not disassembled the iMac yet.
I leave tomorrow for a business trip so I will try to accomplish both upon my return.
I will be certain to advise you.
Again, thanks for your interest and help.
