I am running OS X 4.2 on an iMac "dome". When I first installed OS X 4 my machine would sleep automatically after the preset time had elapsed. Now it does not, although the screen does darken. I have checked my energy saver settings; these are as I wish them to be. The only change I have made is to install Cocktail".
My machine will sleep when I command it to do.

Roger,
My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you.
Go to Home>Library>Preferences.
Go to the view menu and select by list. This will put things in alpha order and make it easier to find files.
Locate and trash the com.apple.system preferences.plist
Empty the trash
Now go to the System Preferences and reset your options, especially the Energy Saver.
In Energy Saver, double check the options button and make sure all the boxes are unchecked.
Now give it a test run.
Let me know how you do.

Cheryl,
Many thanks for the prompt and clear reply. Alas, it has made no difference. Because I am always concerned when I play with Library files I kept a copy of com.apple.system preferences.plist on my backup disc. Should I restore it to the Library fire?

Roger,
You can safely trash that saved file as a new one has been generated.
Double check the Energy Saver Pane. Click on Option and make sure all boxes are unchecked.
Next, in the Sleep window, uncheck the put the hard disk to sleep (if it is), then move the both sliders to never. Close System Preferences.
Now Open System Preferences>Energy Saver and move just the display to where you want it. Close system Preferences.
Give it a test run and let me know how you do.

Cheryl,
Thank you for your response.
Did you mean me to move "just the display" to where I want it? Should I not have moved the "sleep" slider as well?
Anyway, I tried both ways and repaired permissions and restarted the computer. Alas, no success.
Any further ideas? It's not very important, as I can always remember to put it to sleep manually. This is only a problem if my computer is awakened by say, the cat, or some other external agency. I like to leave it on 24/7.
Regards
Roger

Roger,
Here's a solution that has worked for others so it might help you:
Shut down iMac, unplug for 30 seconds, plug in and restart.
Let me know if that works.

Cheryl,
Still no luck, I'm afraid. I tried what you suggested (and also unplugged all extraneous hardware).
Looks as if I'll have to live with it until I reinstall, which I don't want to do for the time being.

Roger,
It is strange that it will go to sleep on command, but not automatically. I noticed that my iMac occasionally does the same thing, but that has not happened recently.
Did you download the latest security update? Repair permission before the install, then after the install, repair permissions. It just might correct the problem. The update is available through Software Update in the System Preferences. And while Apple claims it is a security update, I think there are some bug fixes in it also.

Cheryl,
Thanks. Yes, I have the latest update, 4.2. I did have a similar problem when I ran OS X 2. It disappeared when I upgraded to X4 and all was OK until very recently. The only new software installed at about that time was "cocktail" although I also updated some drivers for my scanner. I can't connect my problem precisely with these downloads however, and I doubt these are responsible.
If I solve the problem I'll let you know. Meanwhile many thanks for your help.
Roger
