HI ALL,

Earlier this week, my G5 iMac went haywire. I went to login and the screen is all fuzzy and hazy. When it gets to the LOGIN panel, it is fine. But then when OS X launches, I get little lines and pixelation on the screen and when I go to the Dock, it freezes. Then the screen freezes with a mass of blue diagonal lines. I removed APE Manager and turned off all haxies but no joy. The only way I can start at the moment is through a Safe Boot. I have tried using TechTool Pro, DiskWarrior, Nortons, Virex, MacJanitor, Zebra Scanner and, of course, Disk Utility.

I have tried zapping the P-RAM, doing single user start ups, doing fsck -fy, reinstalling Tiger. Nothing seems to enable me to restart normally.

Ok, so during Safe Boot, it starts well and is stable (except for the opening Grey Apple screen which loads OS X Tiger). This screen is all blurry with pixelation everywhere.

This problem has been freaking me out for a week. Please, please, please give me some help here! Much appreciated.

I am wondering could it be PSPWare which I have used for a newly acquired PSP?

Regards,

Nemo.

Since the problem seems to be lessened by booting into safe mode, there is the possibility that it is in fact a third party extension which is causing your problem. There is a real interesting article that will probably be very useful that you can find here:

http://www.macosxhints.com/article.p...uery=safe+boot

If you will scroll down a bit, you'll see the part I just referred to.

I don't know exactly what kind of install/reinstall method you have been using, but what I suggest doing is a real clean install. This means booting up from your Tiger DVD, then choosing the installation method which reformats your drive. This will erase everything, but it is the one sure way to clear out the garbage.
Of course you will have the problem of making backups of any non-replaceable files. The problem is that you can't burn disks in safe mode. You might be able to transfer files to a usb memory key; I am not sure. If you can borrow the use of another Mac and a firewire cable, you could boot your iMac into target disk mode and transfer files to the other Mac.

There is one other thing that you could try before you go through any of this. You could try applying the 10.4.1 updater to see if that solves your problem. You might have to get someone else to download it for you. Or you might try uninstalling all of the app you are suspicious about.

If you decide to take the approach I suggested, after you verify that your iMac works properly with 10.4, then you could add the 10.4.1 update.

If it does work properly, then you can reinstall any third party apps one at a time. Each time, repair permissions and reboot.

But let's suppose that it still doesn't work right after a clean install. Then you have a hardware problem which probably will require have your iMac checked by a technician.

Thanks Michael,

Well, I went through all 20 steps and ended up at the last one, dropping off the iMac at the Apple Store where I bought it. So it will take one or two weeks to fix. I think it must be a hardware fault. I tried a complete erase and install, didn't work. I tried a zeroed HD and erase and install. Still didn't work. Still getting the craziest pixelation and completely haywire loading screen I have ever seen.
Anyways, I hope they fix it or I get a replacement coz I am already missing my gMac! And thanks for the 20-steps. They are invaluable and will come in handy in future I am sure. Thanks again!
Regards,
Nemo.

We do get attached to our Macs don't we? Yeah I know that hardware problems can be aggravating, but they do happen. It wouldn't surprise me if they end up replaceing the main logic board. I know that sounds extreme, but it happened to me with a Powermac. Just be glad you have a local Apple store, and didn't have to ship it somewhere.
If you don't currently have Applecare, save your money and get it before the first year of ownership is up.

Good luck. I think your iMac is going to be just fine.
