TICKET ARCHIVE -> Os X Tiger Install Problem

I just got OS X Tiger and am upgrading from OS X 10.3. I get through the install, and it reboots my computer. A minute after the apple symbol pops up with the rotating circle below it, a grey circle with a slash through it replaces the apple symbol, and it never completes the restart. Any ideas? I didn't backup my computer prior to the upgrade due to the hope that the install would be just as easy as the OS X .3. However, now I'm in hot water with the wife because of the off-chance I lose all the baby pics. Help appreciated.

what model Mac do you have?
What external devices do you have attached to the Mac?

I have a 1.25 GHZ PowerMac G4. Attached devices are USB Camera, firewire CD/RW drive, and speakers. I've already tried to reinstall with all devices removed, and removing all the non-apple memory, and it still hangs up on the reboot. There are no errors during Tiger installation, only the circle and slash replacing the apple logo on startups--that's where it hangs forever (last check 8 hours).

Do you have any additional cards installed, such as a SCSI card? If so, try removing, and try to boot to Tiger again.
A problem that I recently came across is with third-party keyboards, especially USB keyboards made for use with Windows. Make sure you are using an Apple-brand keyboard with your system for the install.
Do you have an Airport Extreme card installed? try removing it.
These items that I mention can usually be reinstalled after you get the system to successfully boot with Tiger.
There is some other information about the 'prohibitory sign' and other startup issues, and some other possible fixes on this page. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106805

Thanks for your input, Dale. I have mac standard keyboard and accessories with exception to camera and cd r/w drive. I don't have the Airport system on the Mac, although I did purchase one that doesn't fit the tower. The info at the apple site helped a bit, but I fear it only leads me to the formatting of the drive and re-installing of the Tiger software... something which I want to try avoiding as long as possible.

You can try a reinstall of Tiger, choosing the Archive & Install option. This does something similar to a Clean install that could be done with OS 9, and puts a clean OS X on your drive, without erasing the drive, so all of YOUR files will remain in place. I hope that will work for you, but sometimes the stubborn problems will remain. Good luck!
