Transferring my Applications from old Mac to new Mac
OSX 10.4.11
I am wondering if I can do the above by connecting the old Mac to the new Mac and will the applications still work properly. If it can, can you tell me how, please?
I hope to do it this way because it would take the best part of a day to install all my applications individually.
Suitcase Fusion, I think, would take the longest, as I have thousands of fonts to install.
The new Mac will be running OSX 10.5

A few things to note about your intended process:

- The safest way to transfer data from old to new is with the Migration Assistant. You'll find it in the Utilities folder. Connect the two Macs by FireWire, enable FireWire Target Disk Mode by holding T on startup of the old Mac, and Migration Assistant can work its magic on the new Mac.

- Most applications will work fine when simply dragged from old to new Applications folder, but some require files in one or the other Applications Support folder. Others, like Mail or Safari, have a dedicated folder in your Library that contain email, bookmarks, history, etc.

- Suitcase Fusion may be a very small application by itself. You need to understand that your thousands of fonts are not contained in Suitcase. They are located in your Fonts folder. Suitcase simply has an index of them so it knows where to find them when you want to reference them using it.

Migration Assistant, which runs automatically as part of the new Mac setup process (if you say you want to transfer data from another Mac), will put everything where it belongs and save you the struggle of trying to recreate the hierarchy yourself, which I agree can take hours.

- Ben
