I have just had my laptop back from an authorised Apple dealer where I had taken it with various minor glitches for a checkup, insertion of an airport extreme card and upgrade from OSX 10.3.1 to 10.4 Tiger.I told them to do anything that was necessary but on no account to lose my iTunes!I saved all my important documents on a stick before leaving it with them.In our house we also run PC's with a broadband wireless connection and I want to be able to connect the Mac to that.I already had the Airport Extreme Station.
I know little about computers and use mine for word processing,iTunes,iPhotos and internet shopping etc and I do not understand jargon.
When I got it back I encountered the following problems :- 1)According to My Mac I have been upgraded to OSX 10.3.9 Is this the same as OSX v10.4 Tiger that I have been charged for? Should I have been given a box with instructions and CD ROMs for reinstallation for the £75.74 I paid for OSX v10.4 Tiger,if that is what they installed? The Airport Extreme Card was fitted.
2)Everything that was on my old hard disc seems to have been saved onto a file ending in dmg. There is an icon there for iTunes but I can't find any of the music I had stored. Is it there somewhere and if so how can I put it into tje iTunes for access as before?
3)There does not seem to be a word processing package any longer.Previously I had Apple Works but I can't find this now.Is it there somewhere?
4)When I inserted my Disgo memory stick to open up my saved documents I could not open them because I got the message that there was no default application to open the document and I could not make sense of the application box.How do I choose an application? Please explain in very simple language!
5)You will have probably worked out by now that I am writing this on one of the PC's, because I can't understand the instruction manual that comes with the Airport Extreme Station. Can some kind person please help me step by step, again in very simple language, through what I have to do to connect the Mac to my existing broadband connection?
Thanks.

Hi chris,

ok, this is going to be a long post, so get a cup of coffee first.......

1) if you paid for tiger, you should have tiger (10.4) disks, box and all. If you go to the apple icon in the top left of your screen, select this and then select "About this Mac" it should give the system that you are currently running. This should say Mac OS X version 10.4 (for tiger). If this says 10.3.9, then all you have is the upgrade from 10.3.1 to 10.3.9 (exactly the same system software with just the FREE upgrades from apple). if you were charged £75.74 for this service, i would have a strong word with the manager of the store (the words "daylight robbery" spring to mind) . I am confused at the price though, because apple itself sells tiger at £88.00.

2) a .dmg file is known as a disc image. if you double click this image, then this will open a folder which (hopefully) contains all of your data. What it sounds like they have done is save all of the information that was there in one place, then they have installed a clean version of 10.3. This will also explain the inability for the computer to find the suitable application. what you need to do is the following

a) double click the .dmg file (i assume there is only one)
b) an icon that looks like an external hard drive should appear, and in here should be all of your information. The important things that you will need are your applications and your users.

before i go further, i am thinking that maybe the best thing you can do is go back and give them a talking to, as when 10.4 is installed, then most of what i'm going to tell you needs to be repeated.

go back to the store and demand the following....

1) if you have paid for tiger, then you want tiger installed and you want to recieve all of the documentation and discs. in fact while your at it, tell them you want it upgraded to the lastest issue too (10.4.2) this upgrade is free from apple.
2) you want them to reinstall all of your photos, tunes and applications, and them to be in the correct places, not thrown into a .dmg file. This is about 10 minutes work for someone who knows his/her way arond a mac.

as for the airport card, the way to link up with this is dependant on which version you have. get back to me when you get somewhere with the apple dealer

good luck

Sam
