Been having problems for some time now. Slow all around. Sometimes won't boot up at all. Have had it diagnosed, no virus found. But I just updated for security issues, and it won't boot again. Had to load installation disk and back door it. Any clues?

Need a lot more details, like what is "back door it" (in this context), what's slow, etc. Could be anything from what you say, including a bad hard drive, a bad directory, etc. etc.
Thanks.

Back Door - I loaded Tiger install disk, then quit installation and asked to sgtart from strat up disk. Otherwise, all I would get is Apple logo and timer going on and on. OS X would not boot.
Slow --- as in everything is taking a very long time to process. This is paticularly true if I shut down & start up again. Example - 10 minutes to boot up, minutes to wait for a program to open, etc. I stopped turning it off. Just put it to sleep. My guess (and it is a guess for I know very little about these things) is that it is the hard drive. But I have been told it is not by the guys at Compaq who service Macs, and also by the guys at my husbands plant who design with Macs day in day out. (Trust them more than Compaq). It is one of the first G4s. Bought in 2003.

Run the Apple Hardware Utility (AHT) which is on one of your original install discs (it varies depending on the Apple computer you have). Although it often doesn't help, if it does find a hardware problem, then assuming you have AppleCare, you can get it fixed at no charge

Please make sure your HD is backed up before you do anything else!

Finally, try a utility like Diskwarrior 4.0 to completely rebuild your directory. DW comes with its own startup CD, although you can run it from a separate bootable drive. It's not cheap but it is invaluable in these cirumstances. Please let us know what happens.

I did run the AHT. It found no problems.
I will check out the disk warrior.
Thanks.
