Knowledge Level: Intermediate
Problem: Combination
Computer Type: Apple
Model: iMac
RAM: 4meg
RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: MacOS 8

Description:
I use an array of Adobe products to create my web pages on my iMac.

I need to run these programs:

Photoshop 5.0

Illustrator 7.0

Pagemaker 6.5

ImageReady 1.0

PageMill 3.0

Premier 5.0

Appleworks

Simpletext (for writing HTML).

Macromedia Freehand 8.0

Alot, I know.

When I try to run one or more applications, and sometimes just one.

I get memory warnings and crashes of my Finder.

Do I need to partition?

Can I partition on the iMac?

How and where would I find that specific info?

Hello Justin:
You do not need to partition the hard drive. You do need more RAM. You say you have 4 mb of RAM. This does not make sense to me as the iMac comes with 32 mb of RAM. Anyways - to open all those apps at once, or even a few, you need more RAM. By going to the apple menu and selecting 'about this computer' you can see how much RAM you have and how much each open application is using. I suggest you add RAM to at least 64 mb for the Apps you name. The more you want open at the same time, the more RAM you will need. RAM is cheap. Maybe you should go for a 128 mb chip. This will fix your problems. Also, go to the memory control panel and turn on virtual memory. Adjust it to equal 2x + 1 where x equals the amount of mb of installed RAM in your iMac. For example, if you have 64 mb RAM installed, 2(64) + 1 = 129. This will 'use' 129 mb of hard disk sspace too but is worth it for the added performance.
You might also need to up the RAM dedicated to a specific application, like RAM-hungry PhotoShop. To do that select the icon of the application with one mouse click (when it is NOT open). Then choose 'get info' from the file menu. Now you can double click the memory fields and adjust them. Make sure you don't set them for more memory than is available. (see 'about this computer' in the apple menu for how mauch is available).
Take care - H. Michael
