Knowledge Level: Intermediate
Problem: Combination
Computer Type: Apple
Model: 6500
RAM: 64meg
RAM Enhancer: Virtual Memory
OS Version: System 7.6

Description:
This is about a friend's PowerMac 6500. She had 32M of RAM, and was getting "Out of Memory" messages running Netscape Navigator 3 (set at 10 megs). ComputerWare (the local Mac boutique) sold her 32 meg additional RAM (not to mention dropping the computer when they installed it) but she still got "Out of Memory" messages. I had her set Virtual Memory to 1 meg, and use "Mac OS Purge" when she gets the "Out of Memory" message,
which has apparently helped, but it seems to me that she shouldn't be getting those messages in the first place. Any suggestions? I thought 32 bit addressing might be turned off, but she's using system 7.6, which only runs in 32 bit addressing.

Hello David,

It would pay for her to first verify that she her computer is recognizing the 64MB that she has installed.

To do that simply tell her to boot up the computer and then go to the APPLE Menu and down to the first item ABOUT THIS COMPUTER. See how many MB it shows are installed.

Have you run any diagnostic software on the Mac at all? Such as Norton Utilities Disk Doctor? Something does not add up correctly since 32MB combined with Netscape Navigator 3.0 and System 7.6 should have worked OK in the first place even without the additional 32MB of RAM.

Have you checked the System to see if there might be Preferences for older versions of Netscape still in there? If so, get rid of them, as well as duplicate sets of preferences, but be careful to choose to keep the most recently dated ones if there are dupes. Also make sure she knows that mail that has been deleted also requires going to the FILE MENU to EMPTY TRASH or else you can build up a tremendous file of what you think has long since been dumped.

Then get back to me.
