I upgraded from 10.3 to 10.4.1, and now outgoing e-mail is not working. My ISP is Verizon, using a verizon pop3 account and a yahoo pop3 account. the settings did not change. Using outgoing.verizon.net for verizon and smtp.mail.yahoo.com for yahoo. it works sometimes, but lately not at all. this was not a problem before i upgraded. incomming mail is fine, no problems.
I get the error message cannot send with selected server. sometimes i try another server and it works, sometimes not. I ran the connection doctor, and it says everything is fine.

Brian,
My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you.
Which account do you have trouble sending? Verizon or Yahoo?
If it is the Yahoo account, try using the Verizon smtp server.
Many ISPs are blocking smtp ports unless you use their outgoing email server. SBC is doing this.

Cheryl,
Thanks for the quick reply. It's both accounts. I have tried to switch the yahoo account to the verizon outgoing, and that does not help.
I just remembered a patch i did for this in 10.3:
% sudo ifconfig en1 mtu 1492
just tried this on the command line, and is seems to work.
the instructions i got said to put it in /System -> Library -> StartupItems -> Network -> Network
In 10.4, that file is not in that location. Do you know where that config file is, or how else i can reset the block size?

Brian,
In Tiger, the Network folder is in Hard Drive>Library>Preferences.
When you installed Tiger, did you use Upgrade, Archive or Clean install?
If you used Upgrade, that could be the cause of the problem. The only way to correct that is to do an Archive and Preserve install.

I did an upgrade, but this is the only config change I made in the past. I'll put the command in the new location and it should work. Thanks for the help.

Brian,
Let me know if it works. Remember that you may need to restart the computer in order for that file to start working.

Brian,
You need to do an Archive and Preserve install of 10.4. The Upgrade you did, did not move and install the correct files.
Start up from your Mac OS X Install DVD.
Select your language. The Welcome to the Mac OS X Installer window appears.
Click Continue. The Important Information window appears.
After reading or printing the information, click Continue. The Software License Agreement window appears.
After reading or printing the information, click Continue.
An agreement sheet appears. If you agree with the license agreement, click Agree. The Select a Destination window appears.
Click the volume that you wish to install to.
Click Options. The installation options sheet appears.
Select Archive and Install.
Select the volume which already has Mac OS X installed.
You should also select Preserve Users and Network Settings, to preserve network and Home directory settings.
Click OK.
Click Continue to begin the installation.
After restart, you will need to repair permissions with Disk Utility (in Utilities folder). You will also need to install Stuffit Expander and your anti virus if you use one.
Now you can use Software Update (System Preferences - light switch in the dock) to get 10.4.1 and the security updates.
After the install and restart, use Disk Utility to repair permissions again.
Now give Mail a try.
