Hi Loma

Sounds like you have instructions for doing something on a Windows system.

There is no Task Bar on a Mac system.

Exactly what is it that you are trying to do?

Add more fonts to your system?

Do you use Outlook for your email in Classic?

Well I am working in OS 10, but I have 9 on here.
Because I have to use older versions of some applications.
I was trying to add to my fonts - some free ones, but it
seems to not want to take the group of them it asks me
to drag Outlook Express Identities to the bar at the bottom of
the page.

If you can tell me the name and the URL, I can look for myself.

This font should download as 'de.zip'. Double click that folder and it should unzip. Inside is the font 'deadlyenglish.ttf'.

Drag that to your Font folder here;

Well I have another question...how many fonts can I have on my computer?
It is running real slow when it comes up and when I choose a type tool it
has to stop and think...what could it be?

Loma

In systems prior to OS X, there was a 127 font limit. I don't know of a limit in OS X, but the more fonts you have, the slower startup will be, and can cause slow downs when using fonts.

You might want to use a font program to control tfonts, just keep a small number turned on and add as you need.

Ok I have 1666 on it but have turned off a bunch but it still is
not thinking well...each time I am in the Corel Draw 11 and use the
font tool it thinks then when I use the list it even has to go through
all of them even though some are inactive... should I just put them
in a folder somewhere else or what. I have a bunch on a disk so
I could delete them if I need to.

Could be a problem with CorelDraw if that's the only program doing this. Look for any preference file for it and move to the desktop and try.

Well anything I do is slow -- I can't find the Pref. that can be drug to
the desk top. I did go into the pref. folder when Corel is open
and it has something about the fonts... would that be where I
turn off showing the T 1 fonts and symbols - it says don't show.
would that help? Or should I just go through and take some off?
Loma
bobw - Jul 8, 2005 - 10:48 am

Loma

I can't help with Corel as I don't have it.

But it's probably time for some maintainance.

Use Disk Utility in your Utility folder to Repair Permissions.

Next, boot off the OS X CD by holding the C key down. After the Installer window appears, go up to the Installer Menu to Disk Utility and use it to Repiar Disk. If it finds and fixes any errors, run it again, do that until it finds no errors.

Next, download 'Yasu" (free);

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/21674

Use that to cleard all Caches and run the Cron scripts (Apple's built in maintainance routines).

Well I did the Disk Utility in the Utility folder to Repair Permissions.

Then Tried to reboot using OS X CD by holding down the C Key.
But the option of Repair Disk could not be chosen. All that was
was the Repair Permissions again. So what do I do.
Down load the "Yasu" now ?
Also what is the Mac OS X Kcode Tools do?

bobw - Jul 8, 2005 - 11:35 am

Loma

When you boot off the Disk and use Disk utility, select the disk to repair on the left side then you should be able to choose repair Disk.

Unless it didn't boot off the CD.

Yes, download and run Yasu. You can do that weekly to help keep the machine in good shape.

XCode are tools for programming.

Do you think the update for Mac 10.4.1 will help anything?
Loma
bobw - Jul 8, 2005 - 12:35 pm
image
image
Loma

The 10.4.1 update fixes a number of problems, but before doing that, run 'fsck' to fix pr=any problems that may be on the disk;

To run fsck, you first need to start up your Mac in single-user mode. Here's how:

1. Restart your Mac.

2. Immediately press and hold the Command and "S" keys.

You'll see a bunch of text begin scrolling on your screen. In a few more seconds, you'll see the Unix command line prompt (#).

You're now in single-user mode.

Now that you're at the # prompt, here's how to run fsck:

1. Type: "fsck -f" (that's fsck-space-minus-f).

2. Press Return.

The fsck utility will blast some text onto your screen. If there's damage to your disk, you'll see a message that says:

***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****

If you see this message--and this is extremely important-- repeat running fsck. It is normal to have to run fsck more than once -- the first run's repairs often uncover additional problems..

When fsck finally reports that no problems were found, and the # prompt reappears:

3. Type: "reboot" to restart,

or type "exit" to start up without rebooting.

4. Press Return.

Your Mac should proceed to start up normally to the login window or the Finder.

It is a lot quicker... the only thing is I have to re-inter all
the airport info and Internet stuff and start all over...
don't need that - I did turn off the T1 fonts in Corel and
it ran faster - should I just delete them in my font book?
I think that is what is causing the problem. It didn't do all
this till I put more fonts in it. I did bring some in from
OS 9 will that cause prob.? What else can I do.
Will the Hardware disk help?
Loma
bobw - Jul 8, 2005 - 3:15 pm

Sounds like the fonts may be causing it. Try removing them and any you've added and see ho wit is.

The Hardware CD will test the hardware, which seems to be ok.

This page lists the fonts installed by the system;

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25710

The other fonts folder located here;

user>library>fonts

Are fonts for that specific user. Try dragging that folder to the Desktop and restart first, incase the problem is in that folder.

Would it be possible to reload the font book only??
Also I just noticed that the ATM folder in 9 is now empty
it had over 9,000 fonts on it. I do have a CD burned of all of
them -- happened to have from before. I don't know what
happened - I moved some of them to 10. could that be
the problem -- moving them?
I am trying to take all the T1 (Postscript fonts) off.
Those are on the CD.
Loma
bobw - Jul 8, 2005 - 3:48 pm

At this point, I would remove all fonts that weren't installed by the system and see how the machine is.

bobw - Jul 9, 2005 - 10:11 am

You should have the Apple fonts in the Fonts folder both these locations;

Library>Fonts

and

System>Library>Fonts

The Font folder here;

user>Library>Fonts

I would remove to the desktop and restart.

Any fonts not installed by the system in the other two locations above as listed on this page;

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25710

remove those.

Ok I am going to try to explain this.
there are 6 different ones...
Library>lomagibson has 2,359
Hard drive>library has 1,530
Hard drive previous system>Previous System > has 10
Hare drive> Previous system > Previous system > Library has 29
Hard drive> Previous system > Previous system 1 > user > tim newton > Library has 1530
lomaagibson >Library has ? that is the new one I set up.

I am not sure what to leave and not.
I am sorry about this
bobw - Jul 11, 2005 - 11:08 am
image
image
Loma

The page here;

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25710

Shows the fonts installed when you installed the system and their locations.

When you add fonts, you should be adding to your user>library>fonts folder, not the Library or System.

I would move all fonts out of those two font folders that aren't listed on Apple's page, then move your user fonts folder to the desktop.

Is there any reason why you have two Previous System folders?

I would get rid of both of those.

You should NOT be adding any fonts folders in the Libraries.

Do you have more than one hard drive? or are you referring to Previous System folders?

Ok in the Font Book it says " All fonts" and under that it has User
Computer and then Classic Mac OS. Ok do I put all the other fonts
in the User folder? Also I do not have the Japanese fonts -- well the
foreign ones, so will that be ok? Also will it keep me from getting doubles?

Loma

I would forget about the FontBook for now.

These two Font folders;

Library/Fonts

and

System/Library/Fonts

should only have in them the fonts listed on the Apple page I posted above.

Once you've done that, drag the Fonst folder out of here;

user?library

to your Desktop

then restart.

Put a new folder in user/Library

named Fonts and start adding back the fonts you want to use.
