TICKET ARCHIVE -> Overlapped Extent Allocation & Invalid Leaf

My 17" flat screen iMac running OS 10.2.8 would not boot (stuck at the little spinning wheel) so after some research, I booted in single user mode and ran fsck. After doing this a few times, I got 7 Overlapped entent allocation errors. I typed in something like inum 9830598 -print (I forget exactly) for each file number and each time I was informed no such file existed. I typed reboot. My Mac started to the point where it asked me to select a user (I haven't seen this screen since I first set the mac up!), I selected the icon next to my name, then I got the blue horizontal barber poll spinning forever (it seemed). So then I booted up in single user mode and ran fsck again. Now I'm getting the same 7 Overlapped extent allocation errors, then it says "Invalid leaf record count (It should be 623739 instead of 623736)", then "**Checking multi-linked files" then "Orphaned indirect node temp9831345" then Orphaned indirect node temp9835790" then "**Checking Catalog hierarchy." And finally "**volume check failed."
I have run this 2 or 3 times with the same result. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It's probably not going to help running fsck or Apple's Disk Utility with the errors you're showing.

About the only thing that MAY help is running Disk Warrior. It's about the only thing short of reinstalling the whole OS that might work.

The bad news is it MAY work and you'll have to spend some bucks to get it. The good news is it's pretty good and will probably repair your disk. I can't guarantee it but it's about the best repair utility for the Mac and especially in this situation.

You can check it out here:

Thanks for the quick response. Before I read your response I got my mac to boot from the install disk and ran disk utility. Just as you said, it didn't help a bit. Is DiskWarrior your product? You guys seem to recommend it all the time. Any idea of how good the chances of DiskWarrior working are? Thanks.

Jane,

No DW isn't my product. I wish it was! :-)

As I say I can't guarantee it will work but I'll go as far as to say if DW can't fix it nothing would.

It's rather expensive and it may not help but it's a good thing to have around and definitely worth the cost (especially if it works obviously).

I recommend it, I bought it for myself (actually I've bought it twice, one older OS9 version and now a OSX version) and if anything can fix it DW will do it.

Good luck!

Your faith in DiskWarrior is amazing. It seems that MacWorld shares your opinion. On DiskWarrior's website it lists a bunch of Requirements for DiskWarrior, including:
"The computer must also have the latest firmware updates installed." How do I know I have this? I can't get to my harddrive to check anything even if I knew what this meant.
"The disk to be rebuilt must ... have a valid partition map and must have a case-insensitive directory." Who knows?
Thanks again, Joel. I've just about gone bald from this problem.

Assuming you've been running 10.2.x without trouble would suggest you've got the current firmware for you flat panel. There's only one that I see on Apple's website and it's for the modem which should have any bearing on booting from the DW CD.

The directory and partition map shouldn't be too hard to figure out. Is the volume (the name of the drive) the same now as it was before the trouble? ie is it labeled Macintosh HD or Jane's Disk (or whatever you might have named it if you did)? If so then you should be okay. If you've run fsck and Disk Utility and it name a drive having trouble that you've not even heard of then the volume might be so messed up it wouldn't work.

Not likely though.

Do you have a decent back up? If you do and don't want to spend the money for Disk Warrior you could just erase and reinstall the OS along with your backup. The problem your having is a directory corruption and isn't likely to happen again (well it may happen but it's not like the drive is failing or some other type of hardware issue).

But to answer your questions about whether your disk will work with DW I say you shouldn't have any trouble with it as long as you can boot off of the OSX disc to run Disk Utility (which you did).

I have been running 10.2.8 since I got the computer and the name of the HD has not changed so it looks like I'm OK. So I can either buy Disk Warrior (probably not a bad idea) or erase and reinstall the OSX software and that will fix it. I may have an old back up of files on a firewire hard drive. There shouldn't be any problem connecting that external HD to my laptop to see what is there, should there? It's not like this is some virus that's going to jump to my lap top, is it? Can I connect my laptop and desktop via a firewire and then boot up using the desktop (the problem computer) as just a hard drive? I'm worried about spreading the problem to my laptop.
Thanks Joel. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your patience.

Sorry I forgot to ask this before. If I reinstall the software, can I do an Archive and Install and then will that save all the stuff on my HD? Thanks.

Jane you might be able to do an Archive and Install but it's doubtful. The error you're encountering might be in any of the files that get saved in the A&I.

I don't mean you shouldn't give it a shot but it might not work if you go that route.
