Hi there -
oh please, oh please, oh please help me. I am at my wit's end.
Current info:
Entourage 2004
OS 10.3.9
Tungsten C handheld
Problem:
Where to begin. I've had SEVERAL. Most of which I've worked my way around. Currently, I crash everytime I have a calendar sync. If you need the entire mumbo jumbo data log it gives me when it fails, I have it - I'll send it if it helps - it's all alien tongue to me. Basically it freezes up, then says it had to "unexpectedly quit" blah blah some data may be lost, etc. It's syncing SOME of my calendar. And really random in what it is and isn't syncing. It will sync some recurrences, but not others. For example, my birthdays - I went in and changed them all to occur that day every year and end by next year - didn't sync ANY of them. But I have a weekly recurrence that it totally loaded.
Things I have already done:
Changed all my never-ending recurrences to end, have them only occuring twice.
Trashed my Entourage storage
Trashed my conduit and reinstalled (like 50,000 times)
Trashed Office and reinstalled (like 20,000 times)
Trashed Palm software and reinstalled (like 5,000 times)
Checked my identity (only one there)
Deleted EVERYTHING from my Palm and then set the Conduit settings to overwrite handheld
Checked that little box at the bottom of the Conduit settings that says "allow sync with these new handhelds"
Background info:
I was running Office X previously. Had to send my laptop in for service and they replaced my logic board. That's when the problems started. I couldn't sync anything in Entourage. I had a strong suspicion this had something to do with ME putting things back in the wrong place when I was loading my back-up disks. Couldn't find the Office X conduit (Apple genius told me it wasn't available to download anymore, which was actually WRONG). Long story short (too late) - I went and BOUGHT Office 2004 so that I could get THAT conduit. And I installed Office 2004 and have been having problems ever since.
In the interim - prior to getting my logic board replaced, everything ran perfectly and lovely with Office X/Entourage X before all this muck.
Do you think I should trash Entourage 2004 entirely and try somehow to go back to Office X? I fear doing the wrong thing again in folder placement etc - but I am totally fed up. I just want to sync. I feel like that should not be a horrible thing to ask . . . why Palm? Why Microsoft? Why? Why?
Can you help me at all?
MUCH appreciated.

First, in order to sync your Palm with Entourage you need to install the Palm software AND you need to install the Entourage conduit. In the Office 2004 folder is another folder titled Additional Tools. The "Handheld Sync Installer" is located there. Execute the installer.
A problem with Palm's Desktop software is that it has become less and less compatible with OS X. Be sure you have the latest version, 4.2.1b, installed. This version was very recently released.
If you wish to avoid problems with Palm's software and have much more reliable syncing between Entourage and your Palm device, I suggest you buy Missing Sync for Palm (
www.markspace.com.) Works flawlessly, doesn't require the Palm software be installed, and is fully compatible with OS X through Tiger.
I also think you have some inherent problems with your OS X installation that may also be causing problems. You might consider erasing your hard drive and reinstalling OS X from scratch. If you don't wish to go to that extreme yet, then I suggest the following:
Boot from your OS X Installer. Be sure to use the installer for the version of OS X you have installed. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (or Utilities menu if using Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.0.4 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Also be sure you don't have any third-party software installed that is incompatible with the version of OS X you are using. This includes such items as preference panes, contextual menu items, startupitems, Login Items, etc. Consider downloading a utility like TinkerTool System, Onyx, etc. and using it to run the maintenance scripts, clear caches, log and temp files, check preference files, etc. Be sure you don't have any duplicate fonts installed. Also look for a TimesRO and/or HelveticaFractions fonts and delete them if you find them.

Thanks. I don't use Palm Desktop - so I don't understand why I'd need to have the newest version. I've already installed the Entourage conduit a million times (trashed it, reinstalled, etc).
So, I'm clearly not going to get this to work.
Here's my next question:
Can I use iSync AND HotSync to sync my Palm? Let me tell you why I'm asking . . .
I've totally given up on Entourage calendar. So, I'm moving over to iCal - which I need to use iSync to sync with. BUT there are documents that I need to have on my Palm - and HotSync has Documents to Go, which syncs all that stuff for me perfectly.
So - is there any reason that using both would be a problem? Can I just go into HotSync and disable Entourage, date book, etc. (blah blah all the things I will sync with iSync) and then set up iSync to just sync my iCal?
Hope so, otherwise, I'm totally done with Palm and I'm going back to a paper and pen date book. Thanks for your help.

If you use the Entourage conduit you have to use it with the Palm Hot Sync software which is installed when you install the Palm Desktop software.
In order to sync the Palm PDA with iSync you must have the Hot Sync software intalled. But as far as I'm aware iSync will not sync with Entourage even if the Entourage conduit has been installed.
If you want my advice I would recommend you remove the Palm software in its entirety and purchase and install The Missing Sync for Palm. Install the Entourage conduit in the /Library/Applications Support/Palm HotSync/ folder. When you open The Missing Sync click on the Entourage conduit in the listing, then click on the Settings button and be sure to check the option at the bottom: "Enable Synchronization with these new handhelds."
I use The Missing Sync with a Tungsten E PDA and it works like a charm. If you are having problems it may be because you haven't installed things properly or it may be because you need to repair your hard drive and permissions before installing the sync software.
