I am using Mac OS X Panther (10.3.9) on an iMac G4 (tilt screen). There are several accounts on this computer for use. My wife has her own account, but cannot login successfully.

The symptoms are after the password is entered the login screen with the progress bar just hangs there. No error messages or any hints as to what might have gone wrong. The only way out is to force shutdown the computer using the power button. My administrator account has not been affected or other user accounts.

The only items of real importance or Safari bookmarks and iTunes music collection. The best solution would be to fix the login for her account.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi, my names Paul Fletcher. I've heard of this problem happening before. It usually occurs when their is a custom desktop picture active in that user account. Your lucky that you are still able to login as your account, if that wasn't the case things become slightly more difficult to fix. I think this will fix your problem, but let me know if it doesn't. Login to your account, go to the Users folder located in your HD. /Users. Open up your wife's home folder and navigate to her Preference folder located here: //Library/Preferences/

located the file called "com.apple.desktop.plist"

Now, drag that file into the trash and delete it. Apple will create another file, I think that this file was corrupted. So by deleting it, Apple will create another file that isn't corrupted.

The user should now be able to login.

Thanks,
Paul Fletcher

Paul,

Thank you for taking the time to tackle this issue. I tried your fix but no luck.

Eventually, I logged in as root as manually moved all songs files and Safari bookmarks. After that I deleted the troubled account. I think this was probably the safest action.

Yesterday, I upgraded the computer in question to Tiger. Everything went smoothly with the install. Instead of upgrading, I installed a new System. Once again, I hope to avoid the original issue by this action.
